Searching for themes on WordPress.com

I’ve been trying to find a modern theme with a right sidebar. It’s proving difficult because of the way that browsing themes works for modern themes.

I use ‘2016’, which is obviously four years old, which is fine, but at some time it would be nice to update the theme.

So, I tried to find a more up to date theme, preferably one with Block Editor support. By using the search in wp-admin and “Right Sidebar Block Editor” I found the Verity Theme, but that costs $69!

Seriously, is there no free, modern theme that supports the Block Editor and a Right Sidebar?

My second point is that if I need to find more about a theme, I have to search in a different way. I need to search in WordPress.com itself, eg https://wordpress.com/themes/cliffp.com. Here I can get much more information about the theme.

Why are there two methods for searching for and finding out about themes?

  • Hi,

Why are there two methods for searching for and finding out about themes?

There are many ways to discover themes. I do recommend searching via https://wordpress.com/themes/cliffp.com.

Currently, themes that are built specifically for the block editor do not have side-bars built in. You can use a reusable block instead:
    https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/reusable-block/

And I understand the block editor has some site-wide layout features in the works. So the current themes are built with that in mind.

We do have some slightly older themes which do support blocks, but still have sidebars. Those are available here:
    https://wordpress.com/themes/free/filter/right-sidebar

Just bear in mind, most of these will not handle the full-page-width blocks.

    Hoping that helps!

Is there somewhere that describes how to use a re-usable block to create a sidebar, as you suggest?

  • The ability to use blocks to construct a sidebar is on our roadmap, but not an option we have at this time.

Instead if you need to display a sidebar on your site, you will want to stick to these themes: https://wordpress.com/themes/filter/right-sidebar

I use ‘2016’, which is obviously four years old, which is fine, but at some time it would be nice to update the theme.

Twenty Sixteen happens to be one of my personal favorites, and we update it regularly with no plans to retire it. With this in mind you are of course welcome to use this theme if you are already happy with it. It’s a great theme!

I already use it, staff-totoro! As I said in my original post. Ne’mind!

I’ve been playing around with using a layout grid to emulate a sidebar, which seems promising.

I don’t understand why these new themes have no sidebar; they all end up looking the same in the part that matters most: the one that contains the posts.
