You’d think that in the land where people walk around with implanted chips I should have this down…..I can’t even get this site off the ground….Can someone please print a guide for us dummies.

There is a wp for dummies book, though I have not used it. I believe it is mostly about wp.ORG, but includes info about wp.COM.
When I started I was a very clueless n00b. But I regularly read the faqs (now called support http://support.wordpress.com/ ) and read the forums and just tried things out to see how they would work. I experimented with every thing, and if I’d known better I’d have made a private blog just for that purpose.
I was especially looking at how I’d organize my blog. Reading about categories and tags was very useful. Setting up the main categories for posts was important to me. Also learning about the difference between posts and pages was crucial. Pages for me are basic unchanging information, and posts are dynamically updated (and SEO friendly), but you may want static pages, with posts as a smaller part of your adventure.Best wishes
