  Hi All,
  When I signed up with WordPress.com several weeks ago, I was given the impression that I could route all my blog mail through @wordpress.com, so that I could stay annonymous while on the web. I am not sure how to use this feature…to access the mail that may have been sent to me at wordpress.com address. Can some one please tell me how to best use the email address. Thanks so much.

  You can stay anonymous if you direct those wishing to contact you to leave a comment. To keep their confidentiality, make comments on that post moderated, so that you see them and can post your reply while deleting their question if that’s how you want to do it.

  if you still want an anonymous email just create an email with any email provider using your wordpress username.

  IPs can often still be traced that way, though. Hotmail changed something a couple of years ago so they lost the masking they’d had. It totally depends on the email provider.

  But the IP is still only going to trace to an area ISP provider unless you have a static IP. For example, if I post a comment from home then the IP will show as being from NTLI in Portsmouth, UK. This area covers approximately half a million people with shared IP addresses. Anonimity isn’t really a problem when dealing with IP addresses.

  Gmail does this currently. It doesn’t forward on the IP address you’re accessing their service from.

  Do note though that that’s frowned upon by many ISPs and system admins and some folks block gmail because of it.

  IP tracing becomes useful if you know that you’ve got some reason to keep an eye on blog hits from Ann Arbor (not that I have any reason to…she stopped checking some time ago) or wherever. Sometimes you only get one reader from a given area on a given service. It’s more useful on less popular blogs, of course.
