Security Alert not understood

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

I just uploaded two print screens to my media folder….. The first shows a Security Alert….. The only link button on the Security Alert that worked was the View Certificate button….. So, the second print screen shows what the certificate says……. But, I don’t understand any of it.

I saw this same Security Alert yesterday on a blog I frequent……. The only way to close out of it is with a Control/Alt/Delete to bring up the Task Manager and close out of the Internet…….

Is this malware of some sort?

Thank you all for watching over all those who like to write at WordPress.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi,

Is this malware of some sort?

Possibly. Is the alert coming from a security system installed and operating on your device? It’s not generated by WordPress.com, and there’s likely nothing WP.com can do about the issue that you’ve described. However, you may add a “modlook” tag to the sidebar of this thread if you’d like to call for staff attention to the topic.

I’ve decided to call for staff attention to the topic. Staff will respond here.

    musicdoc1,

Thank you……. I really appreciate that, because as I noted, I not only saw it on my site today, but also on another WP site yesterday……..

It does seem to look like a Microsoft dialog box, but I’ve heard that there is malware that can mimic dialog boxes of legitimate software…….

    Have a great day!

  • I do not believe this is coming from WordPress.com.

Were you able to grab a screen shot?

    lizkaarkoski,

Yes……. See my first post to this thread……. You can view the two print screens I uploaded to my media folder on November 2 for the information they give.

Thank you very much for checking into this.

Ooops……. I’m sorry I did not notice the slip up in typing your name…….. The hurrier you go the behinder you get.

  • Hi there,

Those are not coming from WordPress.com, but from your browser. Whether they’re legitimately from Edge or coming from malware I can’t say. All I can say is that there is nothing wrong with your site’s security certificate.

Have you checked whether you see warnings like that in any other browsers? If you don’t, this is likely an issue with Edge, in which case you’d need to contact Microsoft support.

And if you suspect malware it can’t hurt to download an app like Malwarebytes and running a scan, just to be safe.

    Thank you, kokkieh,

Maybe the problem is that I am a diehard Internet Explorer user — and that Microsoft is wanting to phase out of it……. It’s hard to get old people to want to keep on changing, changing, changing……. IE is so comfortable and intuitive to use, that I just hate making changes I don’t like……. They just aren’t “natural”.

    : (

I’ll try to check into things — and probably just have to bite the bullet and go through the pain of changing again.

Thank you for checking into this.

  • Hi Margaret, I did notice you’ve got at least one extension active. Maybe it’s coming from that? Have you tried disabling your extensions and add-ons?

Also, did you try another browser to see if you get the same error there?

    supernovia,

I only use IE and Firefox — but, I’m going to try and break down and start using Edge because Microsoft wants to phase IE out……. I think my extensions and add-ons are okay.

I have not seen that Security Alert since I reported it here a few days ago — and I’ve only seen it twice: once on another WP site and once on my WP site……. But, it sure seems like a weird Security Alert — rather ominous.

Thanks and have a great day.
