Security concerns

Hello,
I have created a website using WordPress as the Content Management System. I was told by a source that this was an insecure way to go because many wordpress sites have been hacked and source code has been corrupted. This may be old information, so I am wondering if anyone can give me a list of security updates over the last year that have been added to the product to protect against security risks.
