Security Shield – Rogue Security Software / Scareware infection?
-
Hi
I have had a couple of readers to my blog (www.maddesthouse.wordpress.com) get in touch to say that they have been infected with some malware called ‘Security Shield’ when going to my blog, which of course is hosted on WordPress. I suspect that WordPress, or blogs hosted on it, are being used as a platform for drive by infections.
Security Shield is a form of rogue security software which mimicks a security scanner and attempts to deceive victims into buying fake software to deal with fake malware infections or other errors the ‘scanner’ has ‘discovered’.

Clearly it’s not great for bloggers who use WordPress to be perceived as unwittingly passing on malware to their readers.
I’m hoping someone in the security team picks this up and investigates / removes.

Are you talking about a site hosted at wordpress.COM? PLEASE though do NOT post a link to it.
I have a really, really, really unlikely.

Yes, a blog site hosted at WordPress.com. As you can see in my origianl post – I gave the address (so tech/security could check if necessary) but did not link to it. I don’t know if it is likely or unlikely, but it should be checked so I can go back to my readers and tell them that there is not an issue or that there is an issue that is being dealt with/has been dealt with. Uncertainty is the worst scenario.

I just visited your site and did not see any thing pop up and my (overly sensitive) virus program did not flip out.
I’ll tag this for staff attention and hopefully they will respond shortly on it, but as I said, the likelihood of their being some sort of malware or such at wordpress.com is so close to zero.

Thanks – and reassuring to know. It’ll be good to get WordPress conmfirmation that there is no malware issue so I can go back to my readers and advise they check their own AV, install latest defs etc.
