Security warning for websites using WordPress
-
“Security warning for websites using WordPress” this was the heading of an email I received today. It appears to be from 123-reg and advises me to run a ‘cleanup script’ to remove hacked content. As I wasn’t exactly born yesterday I haven’t touched the email. Has anyone else received one of these?

Not so far.
In unrelated news, please don’t put your link as a signature in the forum. We can click on your name to get to your blog: link signatures are not allowed in the tech forums.

Yeah, don’t touch it.
First off the likelihood of wordpress.COM ever getting hacked is virtually zero (0). This is probably the most secure free hosting platform around.
A couple of my clients have gotten them which is funny since they aren’t running wordpress.

I got that email too, purporting to be from Webfusion. It’s taken me two hours to find this reference to it though.

The only emails I’ve ever gotten from WordPress are when I emailed them first for help. And I’ve been here for a couple of years. Spam.

I think you’ll find this one is legitimate. It’s being highlighted on the 123-reg website as an issue, in the name of the company. I did notice a strange name logged into my wordpress account the other day, and was wondering. So, maybe not spam? I am checking further with 123-reg.

further to my last post, I have now had confirmed from 123-reg that this is not a scam/spam, but a genuine warning. Here’s the help centre text (although trying to run their suggested script on my site generated a “you’re looking for something that isn’t here” response…
