    I’m trying to revert to the original blog post format where you could search by date and not have to scroll through the entire back catalogue.

    Your home page will automatically show your most recent post at the top and then a number of the following posts in reverse chronologial order – are you trying to change that and, if so, how do you want them to appear?

    Your site automatically makes yearly/monthly/daily archive pages – like this one for July 2016 – which might be useful to know. I see you already have the monthly archives widget in your sidebar too.
