See detail in photos

  • Unknown's avatar

I want viewers to my site to be able to click on a photo and see detail. Does one of the free themes have this feature? I am a just a hobbyist, but I would be willing to spend a bit if I could get this feature. I have looked and looked and it seems you need a plug in, and I just have the free account. Plus, I want it to be easy to do. Thanks. Carol

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Howdy –

I will be glad to help. Can you tell me more about the details you want the user to see when clicking one of your images? That will be a great help in determining the next steps.

Another blogger does this, and so if you go to his blog you will see what I mean.

    https://wordpress.com/read/blogs/1822465/posts/16784

He was so kind, he tried to tell me how to change the code so that it would work for me, and I tried and tried, but I found it too complex. This is just a hobby for me, but still I would like to be able to do it. I know that companies do this: you click on the photo to see details of the product. I do not need anything that fancy.

Is there some clear cut way that I can do this with my photos?

  • Hi carolee1945,

Is there some clear cut way that I can do this with my photos?

Sure, that person is choosing to link to the individual image. But you might actually like a carousel option better. To use this:

    1 – Start at https://wordpress.com/post

    2 – Choose block editor

3 – Add a new block, and for the type, pick “Gallery”

4 – Upload an image, or choose one from your media library. (This also works well with more than one image.)

5 – Publish, then view the post. Click on an image and you’ll get a larger view.

Would you like to try that?

If you prefer to just link the image to its file, let me know which editor you’re typically using (classic, calypso, or block) and we’ll help you figure out the best way to do that.

    Thank you for these directions.

1.Yes, the photo did enlarge, but not by very much. I would like the photo to show greater detail though. Is that possible?

    2. I did not know where the choice for editor was, but I did see a window saying there was a new editor, so I chose that and I did get to the block editor and chose “gallery. “However, when I went to type the title, the first four characters did not show, and so the title was wonky. I had to delete the post.

    3. You asked which editor I was using. I do not know, how do I find that out?

I cannot thank you enough. I have been so perplexed with WordPress, and now I feel I will have a guide.

  • 3. You asked which editor I was using. I do not know, how do I find that out?

When you are at the editing area, copy the URL from the browser bar. Paste that URL in your next reply here. That will tell us which editor you are using.

You could also take a screen shot of that page instead of copying the URL. The screen shot can be added to the media library and we can view it from there.

    I will do both.

Also, is there a theme that has this ability built in? You click on a photo, and you can see detail?

I followed your directions, and it seemed to work when I was in WordPress, but not from the email. When people get an email about my posting a photo, does that take them to WordPress?

  • Sorry, I didn’t mean to skip over your other questions!

1.Yes, the photo did enlarge, but not by very much. I would like the photo to show greater detail though. Is that possible?

What type of detail would you like to see added? exif details?

When people get an email about my posting a photo, does that take them to WordPress?

Folks that follow your site through email can go to the new post directly from that email notification that they receive.

    1. A friend posted a photo of the moon. I could click on that photo, and it enlarged so I could see even more detail of the moon’s craters. It was fantastic!! How can I get my photos to do this? Take a look–this is what I want to do! https://wordpress.com/read/blogs/1822465/posts/16815

  • Hi there,

To be able to see a photo in its regular resolution (full size) you need to add a direct link to that image. Here’s how to do that:

    1. Open your post and edit the image by clicking on the pencil icon:

    2. On the Link to dropdown list select the Media File option:

If you have any other questions, just let me know and I’ll be happy to help.

Full size is not the same as clicking on the image to see detail. In my May 12 question, if you click on the link to this other blog, you will see what I mean. He has a photo of the moon, and then when you click you see all these details of the craters.

Please help me, I really want to be able to do this with my photos. I know it can be done.

  • Hi –

The moon example is set up using the instructions that @fstat has shared. Please give that a try. Once you have it set up, send a link to the post so we can take a look. Remember, you’ll want to link the full size image, which will have the resolution detail that you’re after.

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes, I tried, but I could not find the pencil icon. Does it make a difference which editor is being used.

  • Unknown's avatar

I studied the example, but my screen does not look like that. I finally did find a pencil in another area, and I clicked on media, but it did not take me to the media file. I am sorry to be so dense.

  • Hi there,

The steps for this varies depending on which editor you’re using.

The link you gave above, https://wordpress.com/block-editor/post/snailsearch.wordpress.com/3264, is for the new block editor. So there you add the image block, upload your image or select one from the media library, and then you should see some settings in the sidebar to the right.

Specifically, you want the Link To setting, and you set that to “Media File” to link to the full-size version of your image.

    Image Block

I would recommend you do it this way.

    =========

Then I see around the time of your last reply you switched the site to the classic editor. In that editor the process is as follows:

    1) Insert the image
    2) Click on the image
    3) Click the Link icon in the editor toolbar – the box that appears when you do this should already be populated with the media file link, so then you just insert it.

    ======

The instructions @fstat provided above is also for the classic editor, but specifically in WP-Admin.

I appreciate your help so so much. I have tried it with both editors, but I cannot find anything that says “link to media file” I did find a way to link another one of my posts to a current post. I did find that. But I could not find a way to link to media file. At least I am getting a sense of WordPress from all of this. I suppose I could post a detailed photo, and then link to that. But I like the idea that someone could click on my photo, and then see details; it is an easier way.

  • Hi there,

I have tried it with both editors, but I cannot find anything that says “link to media file”

I logged into your account and you are currently not on the block editor. Switch back to the block editor, and as you’re on the post edit page, the link to media file setting will not appear to the right until you insert an image into the image block. So, make sure that you add an image and then on the right, under the block tab, you should see the link to module where you can use the drop down to add media file.

    Hopefully, that helps. Thanks!

  • Unknown's avatar

Resolved!!! I cannot thank you enough!!! The block editor does make it easy. I think the problem is because I was using the other editor. One more question. When I typed a caption under the photo, it is not very visible. What to do to make it darker and more visible? I repeat, I am grateful you guys stuck with me on this. I just love clicking and seeing detail in photos. Now I am really motivated to get going with my blog.

  • @carolee1945 you would need custom CSS to modify how the captions are displayed, but I think you’re right in that the contrast is too low there. I’ve filed a request to have that fixed.

You could also switch the theme to use a light background (Customize > Colors > Palettes) as the contrast does look fine on those.
