Seeking advice on chosing a web host

For the past few weeks I’ve been doing some research into switching to wordpress.org and I’ve read most of the literature on that site as well as looked into just about all of web hosting sites wordpress suggests for easily switching from wordpress.org to wordpress.com.

But I still have a problem which I was hoping to get some advice on.

First, the domain that I want must be registered as “domain.ca” since the “domain.com” version is taken.

Second, none of the suggested domain hosting sites (here: http://wordpress.org/hosting/) offer ‘one-stop-shopping’ for .ca domains – they all either won’t support them or require you to buy the domain elsewhere separately.

Third, I am REALY new to this whole thing and I’m certain that the more steps I have, the more likely I am to monumentally screw this entire endeavour of mine up. So I want to keep the number of steps to this whole process down and as such I am trying to avoid buying the domain with company A and then hosting my new blog with company B.

Does anybody have any suggestions for domain hosting sites which allow .ca domains but which also are as easy as Blue Host (http://www.bluehost.com/) in setting up a wordpress.org blog?

    Thanks a million.

I’m thinking you’d be better off to ask at WordPress.org, as everybody here is hosted by WP.com and isn’t necessarily aware of independent hosting options.

They all allow .ca domain hosting. It isn’t a big deal, find a place to register at .ca domain and point the name servers to your chosen host. I register all my domains at http://easyhosting.com and then host at Blue Host myself. I have several .ca domains. I would like to talk about this more here, but it is really out of the skope of this support forums.

Yeah, I suspect that I might have to do that, but I just haven’t started a wordpress.org account yet.

I suggest you look into hosting at A Small Orange https://www.asmallorange.com/services/hosting/

Timethief – I just checked A small Orange and they don’t offer ‘one-stop-shopping’ for .ca domains.

bonjour paulitics: i’m on a .ca and it was my first time doing the buy a domain thingy…although, of course..this was for a wordpress.com blog. anyways, i’m with netfirms..I think I paid around $10 for a year. I had to use customer service numerous times and I got virtually instant responses, both by phone and email so I’m giving them a good grade for customer service.

As I said before in my post, this is not really a wordpress.com support issue, so maybe ask over in the wordpress.org/support/ forum, but where you register the domain and where you host are just a couple of easy steps more than a ‘one-stop shop’ experience. It is a small portion of running your own software on your own hosting.

IMHO there is a huge amount of sense and value in NOT purchasing your domain from your first host. I try and use an independant registrar. That way switching is easy.
