Seeking help choosing a website theme.
-
I want to add a website to go along with my blog, bigpictureeducation.wordpress.com. The new site is for teachers who work with global issues.
I am at something of a loss trying to match what I need with all the many themes available. Here is what I need the site to have:
-an embedded chat function;
-a ‘bulletin board,’ so teachers can find other educators interested in collaboration;
-a good way to store files for assignments and readings;
-a good way to store/display lists of links;
-an easy way for members of the group to find each other;
-a blog;
-perhaps rss feeds.
I can pay for a theme, but need help finding a suitable one.
Thanks for any advice,
Patrick Walsh -
Hi there,
I believe some of your requirements are not supported here in WordPress.com sites. But you can do most of your requirements with any theme since the solutions given don’t depend on themes but on the WordPress platform features.-an embedded chat function; – This is not supported
-a ‘bulletin board,’ so teachers can find other educators interested in collaboration; – I’m not sure how you want to structure this, but you can use a list of posts to achieve something similar. Just make sure you have established “Posts” for your Posts page. WP Admin > Settings > Reading.
-a good way to store files for assignments and readings; – Check this link on how to upload files: https://en.support.wordpress.com/uploading-documents/
-a good way to store/display lists of links; – You can post all your links in one page and insert the respective URLs.
-an easy way for members of the group to find each other; – I believe this is not supported
-a blog; – You could use a subdomain to have your site and your blog connected to the same domain. Check this link for more information:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-subdomain/
-perhaps rss feeds. – You could use the RSS Feed widget: https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/rss-widget/ -
Thank you for your help Carladoria! One question: is what you write here true of all WordPress styles, regardless of price?

I’m not sure what you mean exactly by WordPress styles :)
If you’re referring to the WordPress plans, you can check the differences here: https://store.wordpress.com/plans/
With the Premium plan, you’ll own your domain name (and subdomains) for your site and the ability to perform CSS changes, which can be very useful specially when you want to change a little bit the design of the theme (colors, hide things, change distribution, etc.) Themes usually come with a predefined style and certain specific features. They all have the ability to create pages, posts, widgets,etc. But the layout is characteristic of every theme. With CSS you’ll be able to change this a little bit according to your requeriments.
But if you’re totally satisfied with the layout and design of a theme and don’t intend to change this at all, then the CSS edits may not be useful to you. And you might need to only buy a domain name (18$ per year).
I hope I answered your question :) -
Sorry, by styles, I meant themes. I do not know how to find which widgets/tools a given theme comes with.
-
Widgets are universal for all themes. What themes do is define where to place those widgets. Some themes have a sidebar, for example, meaning that you can place those widgets at the side of your homepage. Others allow you to place widgets at the bottom or you can only place them in individual posts and not in your homepage, etc.
You can find the list of available widgets here: (list is on the right in “related”) https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/As for the characteristics/features of each them. Go to https://wordpress.com/themes/
and then click on the same theme, you’ll be taken to the characteristics of the theme.
