Seeking specific type of theme

  Are there some themes that lend themselves better to groups of users? Are any targeted as Learning Management Systems or something along those lines?

  What might be the best way to explore this need?

  I suggest you check the Theme Directory at https://theme.wordpress.com/
  Click on blue Find a Theme button.
  Apply various filters and see if you like any of the resulting themes.

  That is a good starting place, but the search filter doesn’t seem to be detailed enough for my needs.

  I just came across this on WP.org and I wonder is there something similar in WP.com? ie. the ability to set up discussion forums on a blog

  Hi there,

  That bbpress plugin has been requested previously and there’s no need to create new threads for it.

  There is no FTP access and no blogger installed plugin capability on any free hosted WordPress.COM blogs and there is no upgrade you can purchase here that changes that reality.

  For your WordPress.COM blog you have three free workaround forum options (two of which are referred to above)<: http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2012/04/23/wordpress-com-forum-options/
  One approach is to register a forum on the internet and then create a custom menu in your blog and include a custom link to the forum in it.

  The Tlk.io widget allows you to embed a web chat in your WordPress.COM hosted blog. http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/tlk-io-widget/ There are no other chat options I know of that work on WordPress.COM blogs at this time.

  Although it’s not quite a forum, you might want to take a look at the new P2 theme, which is geared for groups:
