Seemlessly transitioning a domained blog

These are my plans, but I’m not sure how well they will work, maybe somebody more familiar or with firsthand experience could jump in with comments.

Have a domain mapped to my blog. If I want to self-host, I will have to first shift the DNS back to be under my control (versus under the control of WordPress.com) and then point the records to my self-hosting. However, this may cause a gap in transition and I will either have to cause some comments to be lost during the transition or find a smoother transition.

My thought is that would be done using a CNAME record.

For exammple, when I “take back” control of the domain, I don’t change anything at all on the WordPress side. I simultaneously create a CNAME record:

    mydomain.com CNAME myblog.wordpress.com

Once the DNS has fully propagated to the newly designated DNS servers, I can then reduce the TTL on the NAME to 5 minutes or even less. Then, after I’ve imported the blog data into the new hosting, change the CNAME to an A record and point to the IP of the new hosting, and the transition time is minimized down to merely the time it takes to export/import and update the DNS records.

My question is: Does changing the name server designation cause any issues on the WordPress.com side? Do they do checks regularly that enforce them only responding to requests on the domain if their name servers are designated as authoritative?
