Sela

I love the possibilities of Sela theme. Following questions:
    1. For Testimonials feature -a) Is it possible to pull a key comment from a commenter that links to a blog post the person made?

    b) Can Testimonials feature have option to have a series of rotating testimonials from different readers…pre-selected testimonials by the blog owner?

    2. Grid Page feature- Is it only for child pages? Or can it be used for Primary Menus that have a secondary/sub-menu(s) … Hence grid page would include featured photos from ie. latest post for a category/tag topic from a custom menu.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there,
I tagged this thread for a Staff response from Themes Staff re: your questions on Sela.

Thx, timethief. I just think Sela offers possibilities..!

    @maidiebike,

    1. For Testimonials feature -a) Is it possible to pull a key comment from a commenter that links to a blog post the person made?

Yes, you can do this. I was able to add a text link to a testimonial on a test website using this theme. I created the link in a page editor using the Insert/edit link and creating a text link as usual. However, when I attempted to create testimonial page with such a link at Customize, no testimonial was created, let alone a link.

    b) Can Testimonials feature have option to have a series of rotating testimonials from different readers…pre-selected testimonials by the blog owner?

No. At least not without with Custom CSS. It’s an interesting idea though. Sliders and slideshows each display a group of images in rotation (the former being links), while a header can display an image randomly chosen from an group, previously assembled. Why not do something similar with pages?

    2. Grid Page feature- Is it only for child pages? Or can it be used for Primary Menus that have a secondary/sub-menu(s) … Hence grid page would include featured photos from ie. latest post for a category/tag topic from a custom menu.

No. The display of children pages in a Grid page template is unrelated to custom menus and will not display posts. A post slider on at least one theme I saw recently (forgot which one) will display images linking to posts, pages, and projects but that’s a horse of another color. Sela theme doesn’t offer a slider.

  • 1. For Testimonials feature -a) Is it possible to pull a key comment from a commenter that links to a blog post the person made?

As musicdoc1 said, you can add a link to a testimonial in the same way you can add a link to other posts, by using the link button in the post editor.

It’ll look something like this on your testimonials page:

    Testimonials kp test site

The testimonials archive page is automatically generated once you add some testimonials. They will be found at the URL: http://mygroovysite.wordpress.com/testimonial/ – just replace mygroovysite with your own site name.

Links in your testimonial will look like this on your static homepage, if you assign the Front Page template to it:

kp test site just another kp test site

    b) Can Testimonials feature have option to have a series of rotating testimonials from different readers…pre-selected testimonials by the blog owner?

This is how testimonials in Sela are displayed:

    – On the dedicated testimonial archive page, which displays all testimonials in chronological order.
    – On the Front Page Template, which displays two randomly-selected testimonials.

    From: http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/sela/

There is no other way to display testimonials in Sela.

    2. Grid Page feature- Is it only for child pages? Or can it be used for Primary Menus that have a secondary/sub-menu(s) … Hence grid page would include featured photos from ie. latest post for a category/tag topic from a custom menu.

musicdoc1 has already explained this well.

If you need further clarification about anything, just let us know.

    @kathrynwp,

On the Front Page Template, which displays two randomly-selected testimonials.

Thanks. I hadn’t noticed that, because I only made one testimonial for my test.

Thx for all responses so far.

    @maidiebike,

Cycle Write Blog is a great looking site.

    2. Grid Page feature- Is it only for child pages? Or can it be used for Primary Menus that have a secondary/sub-menu(s) … Hence grid page would include featured photos from ie. latest post for a category/tag topic from a custom menu.

Themes with a grid-style option for the front page tend to allow the display of either rows of image links to posts or to pages on the front page, but not a mixture of both. It would be nice if you could have the images in a grid (front page or elsewhere) link to a combination of posts, pages, and portfolio projects if desired. I’ve yet to find one that allows that.

Some themes w/ grid-based front page option, where the images link to posts:
    Fontfolio
    Hatch
    Mixfolio
    Pictorico

Some themes with a Grid Page Template option, where each image in the grid links to a page:
    Edin
    Goran
    Motif
    Sela

Some themes with a Portfolio Page Template option, where each image in the grid links to a project in a portfolio:
    Sketch
    Espied

Is the Sela theme only available for WordPress blogs? Or can I use (a premium) Sela for a self hosted WordPress site?

    Thanks!

    Chris

    @ maidiebike,
Sketch theme is the theme I was referring to in my January 8 post which allows the featured images of either posts, pages, or portfolio projects to be displayed in the header area slider, linking to those three types of content. That’s the only one I know of that has a slider option for all three.

  • Is the Sela theme only available for WordPress blogs? Or can I use (a premium) Sela for a self hosted WordPress site?

You can download Sela for self-hosted sites on the showcase page here when logged in:

    https://wordpress.com/themes/sela/

See “Download Sela for your self-hosted WordPress site.”

Musicdoc, thx for suggestions. Sketch is abit limited for my uses since I posed a similar question for it several months ago here.

I like Fonfolio but it doesn’t allow text excerpt on front matching image to help readers/tease their interest.

The Sela theme for self-hosted WordPress site looks different right?

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes, it will vary somewhat. WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support forums. Read the differences here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

If you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right hand corner of the page that opens, so you can post to the support forums there.

    Resetting your WordPress.ORG password http://codex.wordpress.org/Resetting_Your_Password
WordPress.org support docs are at https://codex.wordpress.org/Main_Page

  • The Sela theme for self-hosted WordPress site looks different right?

It should look pretty much the same. :-)

  • p.s. basverheugt – since Sela is not in the WordPress.org theme repository yet, if you do post a question over in the WordPress.org forums, could you please add the tag wpcom-theme in the tags area of the post so we can find your question? Thanks.

Hello, i am having a problem with my grid child pages, they are repetitive, overlapping images and grey space. Does anyone know how to solve the problem? Thanks https://hauteculturefashion.wordpress.com/portfolio-projects/45-2/

I’m really sorry, but I don’t understand, how I’m doing my Front page template, which should be consist of:

    |The Front Page Template is divided into three sections:

A featured area with a full-width featured image and an overlay containing the page content.

Three front-page widget areas, displayed side-by-side in columns. This is where you can get creative and use any of the available widgets to feature products or services, or showcase different parts of your website.

The Testimonial area displays two testimonials.”

I’m creating a new Page, than switch it into Front Pge Template. And than – how should I add all 3 featured area? I just don’t see – how.

Please, help me to undrestand. :-)) I’m really confused.

  • Troubleshooting everyone’s issues with Sela is much easier if you each start a new thread, rather than continuing to add to this one, so I’m going to lock this thread so we can continue in smaller, more individual threads.

Before posting, be sure to check out the Sela documentation for guidance on how to set up the theme:
    https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/sela/

donnawanderlust – your image is repeated twice and the grey area is there because you’re using a square image as your featured image. Featured images in Sela should be at least 1180 pixels wide to take up the full width in that space. The grid page template should only to be applied to the parent page, not the child pages. Learn more about creating pages and sub-pages (child pages).

donnawanderlust and lybany – could you please each start your own threads if you need further help? lybany be sure to provide a link to your site running Sela.

Head here to start a new thread in the Themes forum:
    https://en.forums.wordpress.com/forum/themes#postform

    Thanks!
