Sela Questions

    Two things.

I’m wanting to know how to make my blog grid page only show the quote snippet of my posting.

Another thing I am hoping to make my postings not show in the Blog drop down menu.

    Any suggestions?
    Thank you!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Ah I figured out the quote issue.

Use a custom menu but don’t include posts in the items.

  • Looks like musicdoc1 pointed you to the custom menu documentation – just let us know if you need further help on either issue!

I think I am still confused. I read over all of the custom menu page but still don’t understand.

  • Sure, just let me know what you’re having trouble with and I’d be glad to help figure things out with you.

If you’d just like “Blog” to appear in your menu, without the sub-menu items you have now (Charleston, Base 121, Almost Heaven) then you can delete those three items from your menu. Just open up each item and click Remove, and then click the Save Menu button when you’re done.

One thing that I’m wondering about is that you have published a page called Blog, with other pages under it, but you aren’t actually using posts for the blog – which are normally intended to be used for anyone setting up a blog – you’re using pages instead. You can learn more about the different between posts and pages.

Posts normally display a date alongside them, and you can add categories and tags to posts so they can be displayed in different ways. And usually the blog page displays your posts one after the other in reverse chronological order, so you see the newest post first on the blog page.

You don’t have to display the blog on the homepage, you can keep it a static page like you have now. You can assign the blog to a separate page – we have a step-by-step guide here and I’d be glad to help you out further if you get stuck.

    Hi, Kathryn–

I’m having trouble making my Blog posts appear in Grid Page. I’ve assigned Featured Images to all posts and changed the template to Grid Page under Page Attributes but it still shows as a default setting.

    Kathyrn,

The reason that I used pages vs posts was because I couldn’t figure out how to make the grid page work without the children pages. I did get the custom menu figured out – thank you!

Any suggestions to making it posts vs pages but still work in the grid layout?

  • amyharlan3 –

That’s right – the grid page template is used when you want to display child pages within it, in a grid layout. It won’t work otherwise, because that’s its sole purpose. :-)

Any suggestions to making it posts vs pages but still work in the grid layout?

Page templates only work on pages, not posts, so it won’t be possible to use the grid layout with posts. There are other themes designed to display blog posts in a grid format, like Pictorico and Cubic.

  • maureenluyun – as I just mentioned to amyharlan3, the grid page template cannot be used for displaying blog posts, only child pages of a parent page. A typical use of the grid page template is for a Services overview page for a business, with each child page covering one specific service in more depth. It’s not meant to display blog posts. You might like to check out Pictorico or Cubic, as I mentioned above, which are designed to display blog posts in a grid format.

I have no idea how to create a drop down menu on Sela. What I want to do is have my front/home page, my blog, and then I want to have several other pages with drop down categories–one “Where in the World” with drop downs for world regions, and then another further nested (“grandchild” page), and another main drop down menu, with “Travel Tips” and then child pages within it – How to pack your suitcase, shopping for local experiences, etc etc. (With Home, Blog, Where in the World, and Travel Tips occupying the header, and so on and so forth). I am having a hell of a time trying to figure this out, please advise.

Hi. You can have a static front page, or a conventional blog where the front page displays posts. Not both. See the Front Page support page for a “How to” guide.

and then I want to have several other pages with drop down categories–one “Where in the World” with drop downs for world regions, and then another further nested (“grandchild” page)…

Okay. So the structure of your custom menu will look something like this.

    Home

    Blog

    Where in the World
    <p style=”padding-left: 30px;”>Europe
    Asia
    Central America
    South Seas</p>
    Travel Tips
    <p style=”padding-left: 30px;”>How to pack your suitcase
    Shopping for local experiences
    etc.</p>
    Steps to take:

    • 1. Go to the custom menu page, create a custom menu and call it whatever you want, e.g. “Menu 1.”
    • 2. Make sure the types of elements you intend to use in the menu are checked in Screen Options (drop-down menu at the top of the page).
    • 3. Add the posts, pages, categories, links, etc. that you want in the custom menu, including the home page and blog posts page. Note that one of these last two will be your website URL.
    • 4. Nest the “child” and “grandchild” items below their parents as described in the “Changing the Order & Creating Sub-Menus” section of the Custom Menus support page.
    • 5. Check “Primary Menu” in the Menu Settings section at the bottom of the Menu Structure on the Menus page.

I guess it didn’t like the HTML code on my example menu structure. Sorry about that.

Let’s try that again, a different way.

  • Hi jetsetjulie – just checking in to make sure you’re all set with this. I see some drop-down menus at http://jetsetjulieblog.com.

Were you able to get them set up as you wanted, with musicdoc1’s help?
