Sela theme grid template – visible text under photo

Hello! Im pulling my hair out trying to work with the grid template page in the Sela theme. Im stuck on having only part of the text on the page appear under each photo in the grid. Im looking at the demo page and I see the page title appears under the image and then one of line of text. When going to each page from a grid box, I see it is the first line of text in a quote. I’ve tried using the block quote feature on the page layout but I still have my entire page of text showing under each grid image. Anyone have insight into this? Thank you!

    Hi.
There is a very simple solution to this issue. Enter the text you wish to display below the featured image of a grid item in the excerpt module available in each page editor.

Hi thanks for your response! Though that was showing all of the text entered, where I was trying to figure out how to show only a small portion of text on the home page and the rest showing when you went to that specific page. I did just figure out this morning that using the ‘read more’ button on the page editor achieved that! Thanks again!

Great. Glad you found a solution.

For the record, the fix I suggested allows you “to show only a small portion of text on the home page and the rest showing when you went to that specific page.” On my test site I inserted a paragraph of 6 lines, about 110 words, as page content. About 40% of it displayed in the front page grid, followed by the symbol […]. I was able to reduce the visible text to a single line by creating an excerpt with the excerpt module.

How did you create a “read more” button which truncates the text displayed on the grid item, but displays the full text on the page? I thought you meant a “more tag,” but when I tested that it truncated the text in both places.

So Im hoping this will make sense when I try to explain it! In the page editor for any ‘child’ page that you have a grid box for on a grid template page, you can type some text and then click the ‘insert read more tag’ button which is in the tools across the box where youre typing, right next to the link and unlink buttons, and it will create a gray line showing the division. Then you can fill the rest of the page with anything you’d like. Anything above the read more tag will show on the grid template page under your grid photo but the rest of the text will only appear when clicking the image to go to the page. Does that make sense?

    What is the excerpt module?

Im sorry, Im sure I just wasnt understanding what you were referring to in your first message! Ive never used/seen the excerpt module, but it sounds handy!

    @ lillyellanicole,

Hi. I initially tried your method on a page set to Front Page template, which happened to be my first page in the grid. That template is pretty weird. It puts the page content in the middle of the featured image. So anyway, the lilly method didn’t work in that case because I had a large image in the page content which pushed the text down to where it became mostly hidden. It works fine on the default and full size page templates.

    What is the excerpt module?

    See the Excerpts support page.
Here’s a screen shot showing the Excerpt module and some of the other module in a page editor: http://snag.gy/2mR2C.jpg, on a test website of mine.

Thank you because I had the same question and wondered why huge chunks of text were showing on my page when it wasn’t on the demo for the design. It looks so much better now :).
