Sela Theme in IE8

Hello! I really love the Sela theme and it has provided a great framework for my non-profit’s website (http://rochesterminilibrary.org), but I am having some issues with how it looks in IE8. Specifically the sidebar widgets do not appear in a sidebar format as they do in other browsers, but rather they’re stacked up at the bottom of my page. Also, the menu items do not appear side-by-side with dropdowns. Instead they are listed in a menu that fully appears only when you click on “Menu.” Does anyone have any info to offer on how to easily fix these problems? I really do not want to switch my theme and since I am not a VIP user of wordpress I cannot use plugins.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

  • Our themes offer support for the last three versions of IE, so 11, 10, and 9. IE8 doesn’t support HTML5 so most modern themes will look quite different in IE8 and that isn’t something that can be changed.

Are you able to upgrade your browser to a more modern one? http://browsehappy.com/ That would be the best solution!

Thanks for the answer! It isn’t my browser I’m worried about, it is that of my users. The company I work for currently only supports IE8. It is antiquated, I know, but there isn’t anything I can do about it company-wide.

  • I understand the dilemma! In practice the number of users running IE8 is quite low, and even Microsoft is dropping support for it next year. If you feel that it’s a browser you absolutely must support, you might look for an older theme that doesn’t use the HTML5 features that Sela relies on. For example, perhaps give a simple older default theme like Twenty Eleven a spin in IE8 and see what it looks like.
