Sela theme issue?

Is there not a way to only show excerpts of each blog with a pic on the Home page rather than the whole blog post after whole blog post after whole blog post, etc? I thought you could manage that by clicking ‘Aside’ (or another choice) in the More Options before publishing the post but it’s not doing it in mine (unless I’m not doing it right). They’re all ticked for ‘Aside’ but it shows the whole post(s) on the Home page.

Also, how can I get a ‘parking’ picture for the blog? Sorry, I don’t know what it’s actually called… when you link to the blog and it shows a pic to go with it, for me it’s just blank and I can’t figure out how to put a parking picture to it. (main blog picture??)

    TIA!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there!

For showing only a portion of a post, rather than the whole thing, there are two options you may want to consider:

You could insert a More tag into a post where you want a “read more” type link to be inserted and that’ll cut off what displays on the blog page. There is information on how to insert these (and customize the link text) here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/more-tag/

Or you could use the Display Posts Shortcode on a page to display a list of certain posts (and include the title, excerpt, featured image, and so on depending on how you set it up). One note though — The Display Posts Shortcode has a limit of 100 posts displayed.

For the blog picture (blog picture/icon), go to wp-admin (https://journeyofamisfitmom.wordpress.com/wp-admin/), then Settings > General. Upload an image at the top right in the blog picture/icon area.

Let me know if you have any questions! :)

Thanks! I will try those options today. Hopefully I can figure it out lol

    Hey!

I’m a user of the Sela theme myself, I’ve been using it for over a year. The best way to achieve what you’re hoping to do is it insert a read more tag while you’re editing :)

Here’s my blog: https://kaboodlemum.com you’ll see what I mean when you land on my homepage.

The read more tag is really simple to put in, you just have to click where you would like the ‘read more’ to appear and then click the icon which looks like three little lines between two thick lines or if you edit using the text option, insert <!–more–> where you would like the break to happen :)

    Hope this helps

@voilalafete — You’re welcome! Pop back in if it gives you any trouble. :)

@flowbeth — Agreed! I think the More tag is a great, simple solution. (And is working well on your site!)

@flowbeth – Something like that re: more tag, but will it not show pics all the same size and placing with an excerpt (as opposed to the first few lines of actual post)? Something a bit more uniform in appearance?

This is more of what I was going for with regard to uniform look and excerpt : https://negativeghostwriter.wordpress.com/

Also, how did you get the ‘share’ bundle with it? Is that automatic with the ‘more tag’ option or is it a widget?

I’m rusty and feeling really dumb right now lol

    I appreciate your help. Thanks!

I just noticed that you’ve since changed themes? Or are you looking to change to Sela?

With regards to image sizing, and looking at the example site you shared, I would say that an image has been inserted to the post and reduced to thumbnail size. You can do this by inserting your image into your draft post, clicking on it and using the – (minus) button to reduce it to thumbnail size. Then when you reach the point you would like to read more tag to appear on the home page, click that icon then continue writing your post as normal.

For the sharing options, they automatically appear, to get them up on your site the same as mine (if you pr using Sela) go to your dashboard > sharing > drag and drop which options you would like to appear > find the button style drop down menu and select ‘icon only’. That will make the buttons appear as they do on my site :)

    Hope that helps
