Select but don’t include blog name in forum posts? wtf?

  • Unknown's avatar

To begin a new topic in a forum one has to select from a dropdown menu saying “Select the blog you need help with”, yet the name of the blog selected isn’t included in the post.
    Why not?
I can’t comprehend why one is asked for a blog name if this blog name is not then added to the post automatically.

I’m only new to these forums, but already see so many forum topics where the first person replying asks for the name of the blog the poster is requesting help for.

Have I missed something obvious here?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Amen to that – our number two problem!

At the moment the only use of this feature is detecting non wp.com users and auto-responding to them. It definitely should be the way you say.

I’m kind of thinking that staff did that on purpose because there are people posting here from time to time that do not, for whatever reason, want their blog URL posted in the forums. It may have “mature” content, or perhaps the content is private (in which case we can’t see it anyway) or a handful of other reasons.

It’s a pain in the rear for everyone since it takes more time, but I can see privacy issues with automatically displaying someone’s blog URL in an open forum.

Yeah, I imagined this must have been questioned before, but my searches (on “include blog name” and so on) didn’t lead to any other forum topics on this issue.

    Understood, thesacredpath.

Perhaps there could be a checkbox in one’s account settings regarding privacy:
“Include my blog name in forum posts”

That would surely keep everybody happy.

Yeah, it certainly isn’t the perfect situation, but it is what we have to live with right now. The automated response has certainly cut down on the amount of typing (or copy and paste) the volunteers have to do to direct people to the correct forums, and for that I for one am grateful.

The easiest way is for people to link their usernames to their blog URL’s, but again, not everyone is going to want to do that, so it isn’t something that can be done automatically.

  • Unknown's avatar

I think you’re both right. And even as it is now, I believe one can skip selecting the blog.

How can I link my username to my blog URL? I’ve looked through my profile and account settings and can’t find such an option.

    Thanks in advance for directions.

    Don’t worry….found it!

I wish that once the autoresponder has done its job that thread was removed. I’m sick on clicking on useful looking forum topics only to find that they’re irrelevent.

  • Unknown's avatar

    TALK TO ME ABOUT IT!

  • Unknown's avatar

Perhaps I misunderstand laughterlog and raincoaster above.
Are these posters saying that this thread looks useful but is irrelevant?

I certainly don’t want to be wasting anyone’s time here, so could you please explain how it’s irrelevant when it is about exactly what’s described in the topic?

    @moonmilkblog

Calm yourself, sweety. Your question was legitimate. What laughterdog and raincoaster are referring to are the number of posts where someone asks a question, the autoresponsebot informs them that they need to include their URL, and gives links to WP.com vs WP.org, and then…. nothing. The post is left for people to click on, thinking they will find information to the original question posed, and there is nothing but the question and the autoresponse.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Um, that’s laughterlog – sorry!

  • Unknown's avatar

that’s okay mrsbitch :) And yes you’re right, it’s not this thread it’s all those ones where there’s actually no content, just a question and then an autoresponse.

  • Unknown's avatar

What I’m saying is, the thread is totally, absolutely correct. But I don’t think it will have much effect on staff. We’ve been telling them the same thing for three years now, basically. The autoresponse is a huge improvement, it’s just that it doesn’t help the volunteers as much as it could.

“Select which blog to display relative to this question” is a really basic drop-down that should be available ALWAYS. And we’ve said so. Repeatedly. And we’re still without it.
