Selecta – Images cropped in half on front page
-
Hi, I’m very new to WordPress and have lots to learn! I’ve selected Selecta (lol) as my theme for the blog in question, because it will mostly be posts with either images or video as the feature. When I click on a post, the images show in full, but on the front page only half of the image shows. The right hand side of each image is cut off.
Also, the image I’ve selected as the featured image for the posts doesn’t seem to show up, but rather just the first image from the gallery in the post.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I don’t see that effect when I visit. On the Home page, I scroll down and see images that appear to me to be complete. However, one image in the Nov 1 post titled “Unschooling Conference Day 4” is so wide it extends into the right menu column. It is so far down on the scroll there is nothing there on the right, and I do see the image taking the full width of the browser window. It looks complete (right most part shows a man playing tennis) but I cannot be certain. However, when I click on that post, now the image is closer to the top since there are no other posts, and it hits where the right side menu still has content, and the right side menu comes out on top so the image is cut off.
How would you want this fixed? 1. Remove the menu? 2. Make the image cover the menu? 3. Shrink the image to fix?
Since I see something different than you see, this could be a browser issue, such as the difference in how browsers handle a conflicting situation.

Hmmmm they definitely only show up as half images to me. I’ll give a specific example. The post called “No Dig Veggie Patch” dated September 16, 2010…. On the home page, the image that shows up is literally half of the veggie garden and half of my friend’s body. But when you click on the post to open it, you can see that the full garden is showing, as well as my friend and her daughter. Does it have this same problem for other people?
Also, I thought that when an image is selected as a feature image, it would be the one that one show up for each post on the home page, but it’s not. The featured image shows up in the “four latest posts” just under the header, but for the post summaries all down the front page, it’s just the first image in each post that shows up.

I don’t see any post titled “No Dig Veggie Patch” on the Home page. The posts stop around October 2010. There is a link for “older posts” so I followed that. On that page I see a bunch of very show sections where each says “This post has been moved to my other blog: Unshackled Adventures”.
I originally started on “theunshackling.wordpress.com”.
Following the link in that message, I get to “unshackledadventures.com” which is hosted at 6 IP address that appear to be WP.com (good). So I assume you have domain mapping on for “unshackledadventures”.
Now I can see issues. It looks like the theme is hard coded for a specific browser window width (most, if not all, are) and it is wider than my own browser window width (960 pixels … half width of my 1920×1200 display). When I make the window wider, I get more of the image, but it is still cut off on the right. When I click on the link to the post I see the full image scaled down in size.
When I right click on the image itself … in the Host page I get a larger image and in the post page I get a smaller image.
Since these URLs both have width specs on them I tried to look at it without the width spec, I get an even larger image at 1600 pixels wide and 1068 pixels high. Is that the size of the original image you posted? This is the URL without the width specified:
It seems to me the theme code itself is not specifying the correct size for the image to match the layout on the Home page, but is doing so in the post page.

I tried changing some images on an older post I hadn’t amended for the new theme yet. It’s called “Figs”. I put a couple of the photos back into the post again (from the gallery) and selected “medium” size instead of “original size” like I’d done before. But the SAME PROBLEM HAPPENS. The image is cropped in half on the front page of my blog.
I think I might change themes. I basically just want a magazine type theme that will display a feature image and the beginning of each post (lots of my posts) on the front page, and people can just click on the story they want to read. But I want to be able to upload posts in video format too
Can anyone suggest a theme that I could use?

If you do your own image re-sizing so that the width is 560 and the height is the correct value to keep the aspect ratio, then submit that and select original size, that might work around the problem, for now.
I think there is a minor issue with the theme itself. It needs to be reported to the author.
I’m not a good choice to get theme advice from as I have not explored them.

If you want high quality images you will never rely on the WordPress.com cropper as using it will result in loss of image quality. Prior to uploading any image into your blog you will optimize and presize every image in either a desktop image editing software or online image editing software to fit the space you intend to use it in, regardless if it’s a header image, or an image in a post, page or sidebar. Doing that means you will also not be wasting your space for images and other media or experience any problems with images that you must troubleshoot to correct.
