Selected Chateau (plain) yet pic of mansion appears

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi all. I’m new to blogging. During setup, I selected Chateau, which appeared to be a plain page, no images. Perfect! However, after I selected it, a picture of a mansion hallway is plastered across the top of the screen. My only options are: Design (colors, background image), Layout (static front page), Settings (site title & tagline). The top says, “you are previewing Chateau…but I can’t change Chateau to something else, and I can’t get rid of the pic. There is no “appearances” tab. I really don’t want a picture of a mansion on my blog, lol. Can someone help me?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You can remove the image or upload a different one in Appearance > Header (main dashboard sidebar).

Thank you. I don’t have a heading titled: Appearance. The only dashboard (I’m aware of) is on the right, containing the three headings listed above: Design, Layout, Settings.

    Any ideas?

    Thank you!

This is your main dashboard screen:
    https://bigdreamslittlefeet.wordpress.com/wp-admin/
    Its left sidebar includes Appearance.

How’d you find that? I click Admin on the left of my screen & nothing happens.

    Thank you!! :)

    You’re welcome.
You can find your main dashboard in several ways. The way I recommend is: bookmark it and add it to the bookmarks bar of your browser. This means one-click access and no worries over where WP put things this month.

I wonder how many people give up. lol Just when I figure one thing out, I get stuck on the next. Setting up the page is making me feel like an idiot, lol. I’m usually pretty good with computers, but apparently I’m lousy at setting up blog pages!

I’m trying to edit the “about” section, but once again when I click edit, nothing happens. I chose a different layout, but can’t seem to figure out how to make the menu options appear.

And, I think I just made some mistakes, lol. I created 2 pages: contact us & about. The problem is, I don’t see links to those pages on the main page of the blog, lol.

Editing a page or making the page links show up isn’t theme dependent: you won’t solve your problems by switching themes. And “pretty good with computers” doesn’t guarantee you’ll be good with the WP dashboard and its myriad options from the start. You should spend some time exploring the dashboard and some time here:
    http://learn.wordpress.com/

“When I click edit, nothing happens.”
Which one of all the Edit buttons did you click? And what browser and version are you using?

“I don’t see links to those pages on the main page of the blog”.
Where would you like to see them – in the top menu or in the sidebar?

I may be in over my head, I suppose. WP was recommended to me over blogger, which is good bc blogger didn’t have the name available that I wanted to use. I’m not finding WP very beginner friendly, tho. I’ve been watching video after video of tutorials, but I’m still not getting it.

I think I’d like a top menu of “About”, “Contact”, and “Home”. I’m not sure what I’d want on the sidebar, which is why a template that includes those headings would be perfect, but maybe that’s not possible in WP, bc maybe WP is more for experienced bloggers. I’ve never followed or written a blog before, but rather have only seen a few blog posts. ;-)

    I’m using Google Chrome.

I am sorry for being a PITA. I appreciate you taking the time to help me.

If you find that some things aren’t working in Chrome when you try to click things, better start using Firefox or Safari.

To edit a page, you go to Pages > All Pages (I’m always talking about the main dashboard and its left sidebar), hover over the page title, click Edit.

Some themes don’t have top menus but most do. The regular top menu of a theme automatically displays links to all your published pages, except if you messed with custom menus. Go to Appearance > Menus and make sure the blank option is selected in the Theme Locations pulldown.

I could kiss you right now. Thank you! Progress! There’s hope for me yet! I’m finally able to sit down for a good chunk of uninterrupted time & try to figure this out. I’m halfway through the “learn” website you gave me a link for. I went back to make sure the drop down was set to “blank”, and it wasn’t. Now that it is, I’m back in business with “Home”, “About”, and “Contact”. Yay!

I don’t really know yet what other tabs I might want. Hopefully I can remember how to add them once I figure that out. ;)
