Selecting a theme

    Hello!
I am just beginning my work and life in textile art and to want create a website that will work now and be able to grow with me. I believe that – for my own sanity – I will need to go with a premium and I am looking for the following in my site:
    A) Visually: I live beside the largest freshwater lake in Canada (it is more like an ocean than a lake). I hope to reflect that in an airy, nordic interior style. Colours? ice blue, sea glass green, yellow, white – natural and fresh.
    B) I am looking to include the following as part of the site: 0) ‘home’ (I think this would be a static page) 1) ‘current projects’ (documenting my work process) 2) ‘gallery’ (completed work) 3) ‘blog’ 4) ‘shop’ (to be added at a later date) 5) ‘contact’ 6) peers or blogroll kind of thingy (?) 7) social buttons, etc.
Thank you for your thoughtful input :)

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi @thecottagesoul!

Several of the items you’ve listed, like a contact form, blogroll, social buttons can be created on any theme :)

For current/past work, you’d likely want a theme with built in portfolio support – other themes on WordPress.com can display a portfolio, but those are the themes that are built with that type of content specifically in mind :)

You also mentioned adding a shop in the future. Are you picturing a full shopping section, with a shopping cart and checkout page?

If so, a different type of WordPress site, called self hosting, might be a better fit (instead of WordPress.com) so you can use an ecommerce plugin like woocommerce to build your store.

Currently, WordPress.com sites support the use of PayPal links for taking payment, but not an integrated store like the one I’ve described above :)

Thanks for that info Chad – I will rethink my next step.
