Selecting a Theme for a Website
-
I’m new to this and a bit overwhelmed in selecting a theme. Is there a list of themes that are better suited to websites primarily and blogs secondarily? Also, if I pick something today and just start creating it, how easy or difficult will it be to change to a different theme later?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Don’t overthink this. It’s effortless to change to a new theme later (unless you choose one of the new themes that require Featured Images etc). Just pick one you like and go with it.

I’m with raincoaster on this. No content is ever lost when changing themes. At most you may have to re-size some images depending on the theme you switch to using.
If you want to change themes on a free hosted WordPress.com blog you must be logged in under the exact same username that registered the blog and who is the Admin of the blog. Note that no content is ever lost when changing themes.
Go to Dashboard > Appearance > Themes
browse themes until you find one you like and click “activate”
or type in the name of the theme you want to use and
click the “activate” link when it appearsAfter you change your theme all you need to do is go here Dashboard > Appearance > Widgets > Inactive Widgets and re-install them where you want them to appear. The widget contents and settings will be the same as they were prior to changing themes.

Well, that is helpful. Thank you! Any thoughts about a list of themes best suited to a website?

They are all suited for a web site – theme selection is a very personal thing – put a bit of content into your blog then try the live preview option for a theme – with a bit of content the live preview will show you a preview using your content – that seems to help most people
