Selecting and Highlighting via Keyboard Shortcuts with new editor

  • Unknown's avatar

Given two paragraph blocks next to each other, and having the text cursor in the first paragraph (above the next) and beginning to select text to the right (shift+right) with the intention of going to the next paragraph, the new editor decides to highlight the whole paragraph block. Further attempts to select the text from the next paragraph results in the highlighting of the whole of the next paragraph. Selecting text via the mouse manually works as intended.

This “bug” is interfering with the muscle memory of writers on your platform and I do hope this gets fixed before writers are forced to use a new tool.

Other annoyances I have found in the past hour:

    • Selecting text in multiple blocks by mouse apparently also selects whole paragraphs
    • Selecting and dragging paragraph blocks around a post do not work.

    Hi there,

Selecting text in multiple blocks by mouse apparently also selects whole paragraphs

    Please could you tell us:
Which browser(s) you used (Chrome, Edge, etc.)
    Which versions it is/they are
If it has/they have any extensions enabled
What operating system your computer is using (Microsoft Windows, etc.)
Adding screenshots of the problem might help us figure out what’s going on. (If you’re not sure how to, look at https://wordpress.com/support/make-a-screenshot/.)

I have also posted a similar request about highlighting/deleting text at https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/possible-bug-highlighting-and-deleting-text/. Replies to this thread might help (depending on your browser etc.).

Selecting and dragging paragraph blocks around a post do not work.

Do you mean you wish to reorder your text? You can do this by holding your cursor over the block settings bar above the paragraph block; two arrows will appear on the left-hand side of this bar, one pointing up (this will move the block up) and one pointing down (this will move the block down).

@writer0001 Yes what I am essentially doing is reordering text. My point is that they removed a method of reordering that is available in most editors out there, including the previous editor. The main problem with the new solution is that it isolates different paragraphs into separate blocks. It is currently not possible to select, drag and drop as it was possible previously.

I don’t mind them improving the wheel, but currently, they are simply trying to reinvent it and forcing users to accept it.
