Selecting Theme
-
Hi ya, one of the questions I am asked is how to install the ACTUAL them we want on a free account.
Maybe some detail helps;
I think it is step 3 in set up one is invited to:
Choose a design
Pick your favorite homepage layout. You can customize or change it later. These are limited but no worry, we can change it later.
The question is, how?Let’s go on.
We install theme for step 3, let’s say Camden – not exactly what we want, we want say, a simple blogging page.Next step it to THEMES where we can find something closer, say SCRAWL Oh, by the way, the selector at the top for fine tuning is a bit off. Set it to find BLOGS and it dumps a wide range of non conforming themes, such as CANAPE and TEXTBOOK
OK, now we try to install Scrawl, everything goes well but, we still end up with Camden.
So, how do we get rid of CAMDEN so SCRAWL and shine thry?
Thisn is the sort of question I am asked. I nhave no idea. For me, no issues, I just rip oout all the blocks and build my own.But this isn’t what some people want to do. They chose WordPress because it suppose to be easy.
Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t a rant or a bitch, just a question I can’t answer.
Cheers -
You’ll need a paid Business or eCommerce plan to upload a third-party theme: https://wordpress.com/support/themes/uploading-setting-up-custom-themes/
With that said, we do have hundreds of themes available, no paid plan required: https://wordpress.com/themes
-
I think you may have misunderstood my question.
I wasn’t asking about third party or even theme choices or selection perse.
I was asking how to change them.Furthermore, whilst I am prepared to be corrected by an expert, such as yourself, I am pretty sure the themes I referred to in my post ARE part of the .com free list?
But that is really academic, the point is none of those I tried, will override the initial theme. I am still stuck with it.
I know it was a long post, maybe not as clear as I would like and you are busy, but maybe reading to the end might have made my question clearer.
The themes I referenced in my post were as an example.
I did try it with a coupe of different themes, which I also believe were part of he .com free library. I don’t recall exactly now, but one may have been Libretta or something. They are still overridden by the initial them one selects in step 3.Thanks for trying, no cigar this time though.

Ah. Sorry I think we missed the point indeed.
OK, now we try to install Scrawl, everything goes well but, we still end up with Camden.
So, how do we get rid of CAMDEN so SCRAWL and shine thry?
Thisn is the sort of question I am asked. I nhave no idea.I’m not seeing Camden anywhere here. Is this site in question hosted here on our servers? It sounds like it’s not, so their NUX flow would be totally different from something on WordPress.com.
Also, could you clarify who is asking? Just curious re: a lot of people asking about this.
-
No worries, I know how it works.
Sometime the pressure to solve a ticket and move on leads to scan reading, missing the point, as you say. Can’t find Camden?
I think I spelt it correctly but it is one of the dozen or so options one has at step 3.
Step 3 i mean in relation to starting a new site.
Step one is chose a name, step 2, chose a domain etc.Does that answer your question, or have I too, missed the point?
-
I think I spelt it correctly but it is one of the dozen or so options one has at step 3
I tried looking for similarly spelled themes; no dice.
There is a premium theme out there by that name. But it would not be here on our servers for our onboarding flow. We don’t offer it, and the user would have to add a Business Plan to install it.
Could you confirm whether you’re asking regarding a site that is hosted at WordPress.com, or whether these are sites hosted elsewhere? These forums are for the sites that use our managed hosting service, and the signup will definitely be different with a copy of WordPress on another host.
-
I can confirm, I was attempting a .com install.
Maybe I have spelt it woring, but yu are correct in that CAMDEN oor whatever is NOT in the list offered in THEMES.
It is one of the initial choices one is presented with when beginning a new site, step 3.
Step 1 : we are invited to chose a name
Step 2; we are required to select a domain option. ie, mynewname.wordress.com 466338 usually free.
Step 3: select a theme, or similar terminology Maybe it is HOME PAGE? We are assured we can change this later. THAT is the bit that stumps me~.Are you understanding what I mean with initial setup steps 1, 2 and 3?
Or are you trying to find an existing WordPress.com site?
If the latter, rien, there is none.
I terminated set up when I reached the: “Change your theme stage.”Just to save your time.
Yep, I DO know how to do that.
THAT is not the problem.
The problem is that after the new theme is activated, the original, from step 3, is still dominant. Now, as I said, for ME, it is not an issue.
I just rip out everything and then build it myself, as I want.
But not everyone wants to get that dirty. -
Sorry, my error.
I had a few moments free so quickly ran the steps again, it is CAMDEM.
Would include a screen shot for you but………… -
Hi there,
Camdem is not one of our themes. If you want to share a screenshot you can use a service like https://snipboard.io/
-
Hmmm, I get the feeling too many people are shooting from the lip.
Well meaning it may be, but helpful not.
Doesn’t exactly inspire confidence, esp from STAFF.Seems you are inferring I am either an idiot or a liar?
So rather than we drag this half cocked conversation on, may I respectfully suggest that the next person who generously donates their time to answer, first invest a few seconds more in going through the process I outlined.
If you do this my friend, you will find the theme to which I am referring.
It is 2nd from the bottom, maybe third between Vesta and Mayland, which quite probably are not your themes either. Thanks for the link, another app?
Reminds me of the little old lady who swallowed a fly!Instead, I copied and pasted this from that theme which isn’t one of yours.

Camdem, Blog at WordPress.com. -
Hello there,
Many thanks for getting back to us with your reply. I’ve had a good look through this thread, and I’d like to just clear up a few points, which may lead to a resolve here.
I had a few moments free so quickly ran the steps again, it is CAMDEM.Camdem is not a WordPress.com theme.
I’ve done a Google Search and it looks like this is a third party theme available on Themeforest: https://themeforest.net/item/camden-boutique-store-wordpress-theme/20960225
It is 2nd from the bottom, maybe third between Vesta and Mayland, which quite probably are not your themes either.
Vesta is also not a WordPress.com theme – this is a third party theme available on Themeforest: https://themeforest.net/item/vesta-responsive-prestashop-theme/15814186
Mayland is a WordPress.com theme: https://wordpress.com/theme/mayland
Are you looking to use a theme that has a similar name to Camden perhaps? Here are some suggestions you may have seen:
https://wordpress.com/theme/candela
https://wordpress.com/theme/canard
https://wordpress.com/theme/carmack
https://wordpress.com/theme/canapeThanks for the link, another app?
https://snipboard.io/ is a free service that will allow you to share a screenshot via a link. If you’re able to share a screenshot using this tool, it would be really useful in leading to a resolve.
The problem is that after the new theme is activated, the original, from step 3, is still dominant.
Just to check, are you looking to change themes, and then see the theme content upon activation?
The reason why I ask is – after a site is set up on WordPress.com, and when you activate a theme you should see a prompt to populate the site with the theme demo content – are you seeing this prompt?
Please note that change in theme, does not necessarily change the content, so it’s likely that you would be seeing demo content from another theme at some point.
I’m really hoping this helps. :)

Hello, thanks for a detailed reply.
I will read it in more detail when I have more than a few seconds as you have a lot of useful info to work though.
However, please, to save everyone’s time, do go back and follow those 3 steps I mentioned.
Frankly, whether or nay it is a WP theme, Theme Forest or Popeye the sailor theme is irrelevant. It is an option when trying to decide which homepage to set in step 3. As are the other 2 I mentioned.
I can’t see ownership being important, when I chose it, it loads, sets up and I can see it in shining glory on my screen. Wonderful.
But is aint what I wanted.I wanted a simple blog theme, so from the themes link I return to the bigger, fuller Themes library and chose what ever it was. I am too lazy to scroll back to check~ :>)
After everything finishes, the original Camdem is still there.
I recall you mentioned content, nope, I have not written anything. Just the usual blurb that comes with themes. So, – if I understand you well – yes, the Camdem setup blurb and images are blocking the new theme install.
Phew!
What I want to know is how can I get around this?I am starting to understand how you think, you are going to ask, why did I install Camdem when i wanted a blog, yes? Well, the answer is there isn’t a blog option at that point. There is a reassurance that I can change this later.
But I can’t!
Anyway. lets not get the horse afore the cart, please check the steps, scroll down to almost the bottom of home page theme choices and let us put this vexing issue of who those themes belong to to bed.
They are there, on the darned WordPress site listed as options. I CAN install them.
Maybe then we can move on. -
Thank you for the screenshot; I can see where does the confusion comes from now.
The design you’re choosing in step 3 of creating a site is just the design of your Homepage. Whatever theme you choose afterward, if you do not change what’s displayed on your Homepage, it will look pretty similar.
Each theme’s page has instructions on how to get the demo look (the newer themes are all built using blocks) so, if you’re interested in getting that particular look, you can reproduce it. You can also choose a template when creating a new page and set that new one as your homepage. The whole of the site, however, will effectively be displaying the theme you’ve chosen – you can check it, for example, on the blog page.
Does that help?
-
Aha, takes a woman huh!
Yes, thank you, that clarifies things.I was asking on behalf of someone who chose those combinations but really wanted a single column, simple writers page.
I need to visit the thing again, later, maybe next year, but maybe, as a suggestion, perhaps step 3 could be reworded. To explain what you have just said?
As it stands, it suggests that whatever you chose in step 3 can be changed later.
Obviously it can not. It might only be able to be tweaked.
Is their a design in step 3 that, when activated creates a simple writers page?
That question is sort of moot, just out of curiosity now, in case I am asked again.I appreciate a picture is worth 1k words, but had the initial respondents taken a few moments more to follow steps 1, 2 and 3, we could have cleared this up in 2 conversations.
Unintentional or not, there was a sense of haughty arrogance in some of the replies, a: ” haha, another dumb newbie trying to use a paid theme in a free site.”
Anyway, Freesatomica, thanks for your help.
Wishing you a healthy and happy 2021. -
Happy New Year to you too! I think the themeforest themes you mentioned were really throwing us off. They’re really not moot, because it would be the difference between our onboarding and (say) onboarding through a different host like Bluehost, for example. There can be a lot of differences, especially during a setup flow, so there’s a separate forum for WordPress through other hosts.
Regarding this:
As it stands, it suggests that whatever you chose in step 3 can be changed later.
Obviously it can not. It might only be able to be tweaked.
Is their a design in step 3 that, when activated creates a simple writers page?It can be changed; they can change themes or replace the front page with a new page, or hop in and edit block layout as they like.
Also the screenshot helped a bunch, so if you have more questions let us know, and send a screenshot too so we can see what you see.

Hello, thanks awfully for keeping this open, sorry to take so long to get back, really a very busy time.
OK, following the instructions to change a FREE theme I see this little box.
How would you like to use Mayland on your site?
1/ Use Mayland without changing my homepage content.
2/ Use Mayland’s homepage content and make my existing homepage a draft.
Keep my current theme <b> Activate Mayland
I chose the last, #2 option.
My thinking is the content I already have will be saved as a draft and when I refresh my site, voila, I will see Mayland?Am I right in that train of thought?
Based on my thinking, I then select <b> Activate Mayland.
Several moments later, my site refreshes back to the Activate page.
But when i check the site, apart form a colour change it is exactly the same.
My old content etc.So, trying to prove whoever it was that defined stupidity wrong, I repeated this exercise 8 times. 8 different themes. With exactly the same result.
Much later, for some unknown reason I wandered into my drafts page and guess what?
Yep I have copies of the 8 different themes content page saved there.Bearing mind I started this about 3 weeks back and had already tried it with several different themes, unless I had wandered into my drafts I would never consciously think of looking there.
Is my logic wrong?
Uhhm I know you re going to ask for a screen shot,
will try to attach it soon.
Cheers. -
