Selective sharing of posts

Is there a way of sharing posts just with fellow bloggers on WordPress, rather than sending automatic notifications to our email subscribers who likely won’t be interested?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi –

You can create a membership or password protected area on the site and just send those posts out privately via email. Does that sound like what you want to do?

Thanks for clarifying it! Yes, I was wondering if there was any way to continue sending short stories to both WordPress followers and email subscribers, but keeping blogging tips to just WordPress followers since email subscribers wouldn’t be interested in reading them.

  • Another option is to create a second blog entirely – but link it in the menu of the original. That entire blog can be password protected so that folks have to request access to view it. You would have complete control over who can view it and not have to worry about your password being shared or anything. This can also be done for free – whereas a true membership setup requires a plugin and our business plan upgrade.

    Let’s work through the steps:

    1. Click on My Sites – Manage – Domains – Add New
    2. Create a new free site address
    3. You’ll toggle between which site you are working on by clicking on My Sites in the future
    4. Set it up with an easy basic theme https://wordpress.com/theme/independent-publisher-2 is great option for writing
    5. Copy the link of your new blog address from the URL bar in the browser
    6. Click on My Sites – toggle to your old site
    7. Click on My Sites – Design – Customize – Menu – Add New Menu Item – Custom Link – Paste the new URL
    8. Add a privacy setting to the new site: https://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/ That insures folks will have to request access to view it. You will get a notification with the option to approve or deny them that access.

    How does that sound?

Thanks for explaining it so well! Some great advice to keep in mind for the future.
I was just hoping to let subscribers on my mailing list opt out of receiving notifications for blogging tips, but still get email notifications for short stories (under a different Category). So setting up an entirely second password-protected blog wasn’t quite what I had in mind. Thanks so much for talking me through the steps, though! :)

  • @tomburton93 curiously, are you hoping to notify a separate audience of blogging tips? If not, you might have some other options with non-posts.

I’ll also make a note on a feature request for suppressing notifications for some posts.

    @supernovia
Ooh, or just the ability to follow a post category on a blog….

  • Exactly @houstonweaver — it’s a little bit trickier on the reader’s end, unfortunately, but it it’s possible.

And if @tomburton93 and others find it would be helpful to make it easier for folks to follow a single topic on a site, maybe we could work on that one day.
