Self adding category

  • Unknown's avatar

I have a phantom category -“1”- that keeps inserting itself into my list. I have deleted it repeatedly but it reappears. It is not a huge problem, just an existential nuisance…

Any ideas of why/how to get rid of it for good?

    Thanks!

Did you by chance delete the default category called “Uncategorized?” Review your posts and see if there is one that has that “1” category assigned to it. If you find one, open the post for edit and remove that category. If that is the only category on that post, assign at least one real category to it.

Now, go in to manage > categories, edit the “1” category and change the name and save. Then you should be able to delete that category.

By the way, what is the URL of your wordpress.com blog? Your username is linked to a blogspot blog.

Thanks for the heads up on the link – I didn’t realize it went to the wrong page.

I can’t find any “1” or uncategorized posts. I think I replaced “uncategorized” with “misc”. I will check that path if it occurs again. I haven’t posted since so will write one and see.

    Thanks for your help!!!

You’re welcome and hopefully it stays gone.

And it is back. It shows as being attached to 0 posts, but has shown up as an option again. Does there have to be an “uncategorized”? Maybe I should rename it and leave it alone!

Go to options writing and see what your “default” category is set to. As far as I know, you you don’t have to have uncategorized although if you assign no category to a post, it will create (I thought) the uncategorized category and assign the post to it.

LOL, I came back to tell you just what you told me! Yes, default was “1”, so I changed that and it is gone for good. I am still exploring all those things that I have control over…

    Thanks!
