Self Host or Upgrade?

  • Unknown's avatar

I have a basic WordPress (free) and want to include some html code which opens a little map provided by the UK’s Ordnance Survey (https://openspacewmb.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/osmapapi/mapbuilder). I understand to do this I will have to host it myself (I have my own domain which is not currently used). I was just about to press the button and buy some hosting when I thought maybe I can just upgrade my WordPress account. But can not find a categorical answer whether that would actually work. Getting utterly confused Can anyone point me to an idiot’s guide to doing what I want. Thanks.

    Hi fhithich,

I have a basic WordPress (free) and want to include some html code which opens a little map provided by the UK’s Ordnance Survey

There may be a plugin that provides Ordnance Survey maps, which could be used on the Business plan. The Business plan only supports plugins from the official WordPress repository but some plugins may not be ready for WordPress.com yet.

A self hosted WordPress.org site is probably best way forward if you want to use the code supplied by Ordnance Survey as there are no code restrictions:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

Let me know if you need any more information.

Thanks for replying, Emma. Looks like I’ll go that route.

You’re welcome! The WordPress.org forums are a great resource if you are thinking about creating a self hosted site:

    Best of luck :)
