Hi there, Self-hosted sites are not automatically added to the Reader through the Tags. That feature is only available to sites hosted here on WordPressdotcom.
If you use the Jetpack Subscriptions module, WordPressdotcom users will still be able to follow and read your self-hosted site in the Reader.
Hope that helps to clarify. Let me know if you have any question about this.

Hi there – thank you for getting back to me. I am using and connected to Jetpack. I did notice that on my WordPress.com settings my posts were “hidden” not “public”. I’m wondering if this was the issue. It is now public but the posts are still not showing up.

Hi there,
I followed your site in the Reader and I can see all your most recent posts there.
Where exactly are you looking for your posts? In the main Followed Sites feed, or in the tag search? As @justjennifer said, Jetpack sites don’t appear in tag searches.
Can you please go to the following link and confirm that your site is listed there as one of the sites you’re following?

Are you speaking of the setting under My Site ->Settings ->Privacy? The “hidden” option there only hides your site from search engines. It doesn’t prevent your posts from appearing in the Reader.

Hi there – I am able to find my blog and follow it when I type in my URL but is that the only way WordPress users can find my content? It won’t show up in Reader at all without them having to add my URL first?
Yes, I am referring to the My Site -> Settings -> Privacy. My was set to hidden for some reason so I just changed it.
Thanks for the help.

There’s no way for someone to search for your site in the Reader, no. The Jetpack and Reader teams are constantly looking at ways to make the Reader more inclusive of Jetpack sites as well, but because your site is not directly on our system we’re limited in the ways we can query it, and obviously the WordPress.com follow button also cannot appear on your site.
So for someone to follow your site in the Reader they’d have to manually insert the URL. See:

Hi @kokkieh – Thanks for clarifying the ways that self-hosted sites can appear in the Reader.
Just to clarify one other thing: what happens when a logged in WordPressdotcom member adds their email address to the jetpack subscribe module on a self-hosted site? Until this thread I assumed that it behaved much like following here on WordPressdotcom, meaning the subscription was added to the Reader. (Sorry for the current lack of jetpack knowledge, but working on that :) )
Thanks for any insight.

I tested to make sure, and you’re correct. Subscribing via the Jetpack Blog Subscriptions widget also subscribes you in the Reader.
So, @bewellgoplaces, you can add the Jetpack subscription widget to your site to allow people to easily follow your site in the Reader without having to manually enter the URL. But in terms of discoverability your site won’t be that easy to find in the Reader. We’re working on improving that, though.
