Self hosting: what happens to old URL
-
What happens if people click onto jameswdcrawford.wordpress.com after I move to a self hosted option? I have built up a small but good following to this URL, so what will happen if they click on this link once I move to my new URL http://www.jamescrawford.org.uk? In other words can I redirect people automatically to the new blog url?
Please help!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

If you purchase domain mapping from wordpress.com there will be a seamless transfer to the new url that your readers may not even notice

OK, I think I get it. Thanks Timethief.
One last question, just to clarify. So if I use the domain mapping, after I have moved to my new url whenever someone clicks on my old blog address, jameswdcrawford.wordpress.com, they will get diverted to my new site automatically? The reason is that I don’t want to have to contact each of the sites which I am on regarding their blog rolls etc and update my url on Linkedin, Friendfeed, Facebook and blah de blah.
Does that make sense?

Yes.

Related, but different question. For about a month I have been blogging on hubpages and also developed a small readership. Most of my “blogs” are actually pieces of fiction, eventually to include samples of a novel in progress as I seek an agent. Hubpages has a nice community, but the blogs seemed more aimed toward the google and amazon sales. Since that is not my interest, I think the better appearance of wordpress will serve me better with my goals.
All of that said, I am in the process of unpublishing blogs there to include here to avoid double publishing. Is there an easy way to do that, or is it mostly cut my old blogs, unpublish at hubpages, create new blogs, paste and publish here?

You might be able to convert your posts into a format which can be imported into WordPress.com. Or contact staff for help. (we are volunteer fellow-bloggers in the forums, though staff looks in sometimes.)

answer – if you using a hosting plan from 3rd party, you will be not about to automatically redirect your XXX.wordpress.com to your new domain.
domain mapping means, you can park your domain here. then your XXX.wordpress.com traffic directing to ur new domain. ( coz domain parked in wordpress). i think thats not ur question. as per my understanding you have purchased a different hosting plan. in that case u can’t. coz if u use domain mapping, u can’t use the new hosting plan. to use domain mapping u can to change to nameservers.
thanks

Note that if you purchase the domain upgrade to redirect people to a third-party site, you still have to renew it each year.

OK. So, my new site is new live http://www.jamescrawford.org.uk. All I want to do is now for any visiter to jameswdcrawford.wordpress.com to automatically be transported to http://www.jamescrawford.org.uk so I don’t lose any visitors.
As per the response from Husdal it looks like Domain mapping is the answer
