Self-Pings no longer working

  • Unknown's avatar

My self-pings suddenly stopped working when I added a second user (with Admin privileges) and attributed all posts to that user. However I am still the owner of the blog (as an Admin as well) and I am no longer getting self-pings in my comments section awaiting approval. I have deleted the second user and attributed all posts back to me and it is still not working. All the individual posts are set for allowing comments, pingbacks,& trackbacks. My General Discussion Settings are all enabled for “attempt to notify…”, “allow link…”, & “allow people…”. I also have all my notifications enabled – except for Browser notification, but I never had that enabled in the first place. I’ve been trying to get this feature back for two weeks and I’m all out of ideas!

The blog I need help with is calchatblog.com.

  • Hi there – Are you able to locate the original instance where you should have received a self-ping, but didn’t? If so, can you point us to that so we can take a closer look?

Just as well, what’s the most recent item you expected the self-ping to occur and it did not? Thank you!

Hi! Thanks for the quick response. If you need a date, it was right after August 30th that I added the second user when the self-pings stopped working. I’ve tried to trigger so many in the past two weeks that I don’t think I can locate the original instance, but I just went to my most recent post (https://calchatblog.com/2021/08/12/%e2%9c%a8blog-update%e2%9c%a8/) and within that post it mentions a previous post from Dec 19th where it says “click here.” That internal link has given me a self-ping prior to August 30th 2021, but not anymore.

Comment notifications will go to the email address on file for the author of the posts which should go back to you once you switched the author back.

    However, based on this statement:

I’ve tried to trigger so many in the past two weeks that I don’t think I can locate the original instance, but I just went to my most recent post and within that post it mentions a previous post from Dec 19th where it says “click here.” That internal link has given me a self-ping prior to August 30th 2021, but not anymore.

Simply clicking a link to view another post on your site would not generate a notification other than possibly recording a “click” stat in your site’s stats page.

I also checked your account notifications and I don’t see anything historically that would indicate otherwise.

Before we can look into this further for you, we are going to need some screenshots of these example “self-pings” in order to better advise what the problem might be. If you’re not familiar on how to take a screenshot, this support document will help explain how to make one:

    Take a Screenshot

Then, upload those screenshots to your site’s media library and we’ll take a closer look.

    Thanks!

I’ve just uploaded two screenshot images to my media library of self-pings I received in my email as “new pingback waiting approval.” I’m familiar with seeing clicks in my stats, but before Aug 30th, just clicking on one of my internal links generated the email (within 5 to 30 minutes) to let me know I had a pingback in my comments section. These 2 screenshots are all I have, because I typically deleted the history of other self-ping “comments” as I tested the links.

  • Ah ok, those should appear when a post is published linked to another, not when the links are clicked.

Have you published a new post linking to another since removing that other user?

Ah ha! I have not published a new post since removing the other user because I wanted to get this solved first. ~Ha ha~ So to test it out, since every post was set back to my user account as the author, if I went & made an update to my August 12th post, hit publish, then tried out the internal “Click Here” link, it would self-ping rather than just be a click in my stats? In other words, can it be any kind of published change to an existing post, or does it have to be a brand new post published? …If it has to be a brand new post, I’d like to try adding on the second user again, create a new post under their name with an internal link, test the link, & see if they get the emailed notification of “pingback waiting approval.”

  • Clicking the link is not what generates the self-ping. Publishing the post with an internal link is what generates the self-ping.

It will need to be a new post, it won’t work on an existing post.

Thank you so much! I added the other user (as an Admin), created 2 brand new posts – both with internal links and they both triggered the self-pings & put them in my comments queue. Thank you for helping me out with this! I am now un-stuck! :)
