Self Publishing
-
Hi,
I want to self publish away from Amazon. My current free site is just a showcase with samples which in itself is fine.I am computer literate having worked throughout the lifecycle but I’ve never been a suck it and see kind of developer. I want to now before I start what is possible. To that end I would like a dedicated set of information with sample sites, capabilities with clickable tips/hints/costs/necessary plans. I think this would be useful for other prospective clients too, particularly those who are not (YET) multi-national platforms.
Another reason this would be useful is that I have considerable brain-fog: could be related to steroid treatments for an AI illness (auto-immune that is), or god forbid, early dementia, and so I want only the information I want and not extraneous flaffle.
Thanks in anticipation for any specific info/examples you can point me to.

Hi there!
I guess it depends on what kind of site you want. Are you going to publish, sell, and ship your books yourself? Or do you want a showcase of your books and link to a self-publishing service like BookBaby, Lulu, or Blurb where the payments, shipping, and fulfillment would be handled by the third-party service? Will you be taking payments, etc.?
But, what it boils down to is that you can do whatever you want with a WordPress site. Here at WordPress.com, if you want to use WooCommerce to set up your store, you would need to upgrade to the Pro plan that would give you the ability to install plugins, etc.
I will note that whatever you choose, the vast majority of the work setting up and customizing your site will need to be done by you. Building a site in this manner would fall outside the scope of support that we can provide.
If you’re interested, we have a service where you can submit a request for a quote for your project. The benefit here is that you’ll have WordPress experts to help build your site and support it throughout the process. You can get started here:

I hope that helps!

Thanks, BUT
I still want a sector specific guidebook AND specific examplesI suspect other people would like that for their projects too
I knew everything you suggested.
I asked for very specific reasons for very specific things.
BECAUSE as things stand I am fairly sure I would have to sign up to a pro-plan before I found out if my needs could be met to my satisfaction.
I hope the distinction is clear.

Hi there,
As helper-heroponriki mentioned, it really depends on what you are looking to do with your site – having plugin options via the Pro Plan really opens up a wealth of options for you.
For example, LuLu has a WooCommerce integration:
https://www.lulu.com/sell/sell-on-your-site/woocommerce
So, you can publish and print using LuLu and even sell your books via WooCoomerce plugin.
With the Pro Plan, you can purchase it and if it is not up to your satisfaction, you can receive a full refund up to 14 days after your subscription starts.
In terms of examples, I would reach out to LuLu or BookBaby or some other self-publishing provider and have them provide samples sites. Since they are third party tools unaffiliated with us here at WordPress.com, they would be better able to help you.
Hope this helps.
