Selma Homepage Static Design

  • Unknown's avatar

Is it possible to revert back to the static homepage design that comes with the Selma theme (with featured content at top, three content slot areas beneath, testimonials) without deleting the theme and starting fresh?

I did some editing but now would like those elements back on the page. I have created the two page necessary to have a static homepage(with posts on another page).

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi raleightay

Staff can help you in reverting back to the previous design.

So, I am tagging this post as ‘modlook’ for Staff assistance please wait for some time they will get back to you on this.

  • Hi –

Yep, I can help you with the instructions to accomplish that. Let me know which site you’re working on and I’ll have a look.

    staff-zinnia thank you

I am working on my everydayraleightay.wordpress.com

  • No problem. I’m happy to help.

OK, so it sounds like you want the site to be set up like the theme demo?

Thank you for your assistance. Yes, I would like my homepage reverted back to the original theme demo layout with featured content at the top, three content slots below, etc. If I’m understanding right, this is a static page that must be different than my main blog posts page?

The static homepage and cannot also be the main blog posts page, correct?

My blog main blog posts page will live on the “Fashion” page separate from Home.

Possible to make this update without reverting/deleting my other edits made?

  • raleightay – I think you’ll be able to do this with out starting from scratch. It will be a bit of work but it’s going to help you understand more of how the theme works by doing it. We are here to help, of course, but we are also here to help teach the community and empower you to successful with WordPress.com.

A good rule to follow though would be to create an export of the current site. This way, if something happens unexpectedly, you’ll be able to simply import the entire site back through that file.

Here’s how you do that: https://en.support.wordpress.com/export/

The static homepage and cannot also be the main blog posts page, correct?

Yes, that is correct. Currently you’re set up with “Main” as your front page of the site and then your blog page is on “Home”.

I’ve updated these settings so now your static front page is “Home” and your blog page is set to “Fashion”.

Here are the instructions on how to edit those for future: https://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/

There wasn’t a “Fashion” page created yet, so I added that. You’ll see it at Pages – Fashion. It’s just a title holder page and it will fill up with your posts as you publish them.

The previous “fashion” linked in the menu was a category rather than a page. So I’ve replaced that “fashion” category with a link to the “fashion” page which is where your posts are going to publish. I published a test post so you can see how that will look.

What are your plans for the content sections? Do you know what you want to add there? And do you have the images already in your library that you’d like to display along with the text?

lizkarkoski – extremely helpful, thank you!

I will create an export now.

I may have misspoke earlier about the main blog post page being on Fashion..

Ideally I’d like to have a Fashion menu item/page where only my posts with the “fashion” category show, and a Lifetsyle menu item/page where only my posts with the “lifestyle” category show.

So, I would have my static homepage “Home” a page with fashion category posts “Fashion” a page with lifestyle category posts “Lifestyle” and my about page “About”and contact page “Say Hello” for 5 main menu items total.

From my understanding there needs to be a designated main page for the blog to go, that lists all posts no matter the category, correct? Being said, with the way I want the posts to show up by category on those two pages, is it possible to still have this page live without linking in the top menu. Instead of calling it “Fashion” I would just call it “Blog” but would not include it at the top main menu.

I do have photos but have not yet uploaded them to the Media library. I was hunting around for what the best sizes are and how to be optimize for those viewing desktop vs. mobile. Any links or references for best images sizes would be extremely helpful.

    Thanks and happy Friday

  • Hi there,

Ideally I’d like to have a Fashion menu item/page where only my posts with the “fashion” category show, and a Lifetsyle menu item/page where only my posts with the “lifestyle” category show.

You can do that using category pages. Create or edit a custom menu, and instead of adding pages to it, you add the categories directly to the menu. You’ll need to have at least one post published in each category before you can do that.

Yes and no. You cannot prevent posts from appearing in the main posts list, but you don’t have to assign the main posts list to a page/menu item on the site. In other words, when setting up a static homepage, just don’t assign a posts page as well. The main posts feed will still exist, but there will be no way to get to it, and your posts will only be accessible via the category pages.

Or you can assign the page, but not add it in when you create a custom menu.

Of course, people who subscribe to your site will still see all posts in the Reader or via their email notifications.

I do have photos but have not yet uploaded them to the Media library. I was hunting around for what the best sizes are and how to be optimize for those viewing desktop vs. mobile. Any links or references for best images sizes would be extremely helpful.

It’s definitely good to optimize your images before uploading to help you conserve storage space in the media library. The maximum size at which your theme displays images is 1180px, so if you resize images to around 1200px wide it gives you some room to play with. We have some information on image optimization here:

    Optimize Your Images

However, you don’t need to worry about optimizing for mobile – based on the image you upload and the size at which you actually add it into your post, we create several cached copies at various sizes that we serve up based on the device someone use to access your site. In other words, we do that optimization automatically behind the scenes to ensure visitors to your site always get the perfect balance between quick load times and image quality, no matter what device they use to view your site.

thank you very much for your help, kokkieh

staff-zinnia – I’ve successfully created an export of my site.

I see that even when I tried switching to another theme and then back to Selma, the static homepage layout and features that the Selma theme demo uses does not show. What I’m really looking for is to incorporate the page elements back in… Large photo at top with content box, three tile section under, followed by testimonials at the bottom, etc.

Can you help me with steps for reverting back to have the static homepage that is on the demo?

    Thank you

  • The step-by-step instructions are outlined in the theme setup guide: https://wordpress.com/theme/sela

Give that a look and write back to me here letting me know where you’re getting stuck at specifically. Thanks!

    Hi raleightay

Select Homepage settings option only under that you will get the static page radio button.

Here is the screenshot for that:

    Hope this helps.

  • Good morning –

raleightay, you should see that setting under the Homepage settings tab in Customizer.
