    Hi there!

Most sites on WordPress.com use a shared environment, meaning that they all run the same software. This is great because it allows us to update millions of sites at the same time. It means we can fix bugs or offer new features very quickly, which is a win for you as users.

However, running multiple sites on the same software can also be dangerous. If we aren’t careful, one site can be used to take down the entirety of WordPress.com. This is why we limit some of the things you can do with your site without upgrading to one of our paid plans. Installing plugins or themes is one of those things and requires a Business or higher plan in order to use those on your site.

However, you may not need to use Semplice to build a portfolio site here at WordPress.com. We have a Portfolio feature built into all our plans, so you can give that a try before deciding to upgrade to the Business plan.

I also see you registered a domain with us. While you can purchase a domain without a plan, to have your domain be your primary domain, you need a paid plan. Otherwise, your domain will redirect to your free *.wordpress.com URL.

When you upgrade to an annual paid plan, we can refund you the price you paid for the domain since each new plan has a first-year free domain credit – just let us know and we can take care of that for you. :)

I hope that clarifies things! Let us know if you have any other questions.
