Send blog posts to Twitter with Hashtags

    I’d like my Blog Posts to go to Twitter with hashtags. Right now they don’t. I see this feature has been requested before.

    Could someone explain why this is not possible? Or, if we can ever expect it to happen?

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    I can’t say this often enough: make. Twitter. posts. manually. Autoposting to Twitter guarantees that at some point you’ll end up with an unfortunate truncation that makes it OBVIOUS you’re using a robot and not paying attention to it. Look at the “From Our Blogs” section below; it’s clear no editor put those in, because no editor would ever write “Weekly Writing Challeng: DNA Anal”.

    OK Raincoaster. Though some degree of civility would have been appreciated.

  • Hi there – I’ve added your suggestion to our list of ideas to consider for future updates. :) Let us know if you need anything else!

    @ajesh26
    What raincaoster posted above was both civil and intelligent. I suggest you take her advice knowing that autoposting is not personal and damages your online credibility.

    Why am I constantly being accused of incivility when I’m not uncivil? I pity these people encountering me when I’m in an uncivil mood.

    If the word “anal” is the problem, blame the software that autoposted that headline to the WordPress.com forums.

    @Timethief, It is indeed intelligent. I’m sure you guys as product owners have thought through all the implications. I haven’t been focused on anything other than my writing skills (and my day job). I have taken the Twitter widget off my blog because it really holds inbound traffic and I wanted outbound traffic.

    I don’t believe it is civil, though. I quote Raincoaster: “make. Twitter. posts. manually.” It’s those periods after each word in that sentence that offended me.

    FYI: there are other ways to solve the problem. A widget to hold hashtags is one and a confirmation / preview before tweeting is one way.

    I don’t want to start a war of words here. At the end of the day, you guys own the product and you can decide what features you want to provide and how they will be implemented.

    @Eurello tells me that this has been added to your backlog. Great! I look forward to seeing how you implement it.

    Thanks.

    @ajesh26, fyi for context: eurello is staff and can submit suggestions, but timethief and raincoaster are forum support volunteers, not product owners. They’re just trying to help people make the best publishing decisions, based on their own (extensive) experiences.

    I agree with raincoaster’s advice; it’s easy to spot automated posts in a twitter feed, and they tend to reflect poorly when I am glancing at a twitter account and deciding whether or not I want to follow it or check out its posts further.

    It only takes a few seconds to summarize and post a tweet manually, less than a minute to log in and do so if you’re not logged into twitter…and I think it’s well worth that time. Then, if you really want, you can put a little time into thinking about which hashtags to use. I think using at most 2 well-chosen hashtags is a best practice; using more regularly looks spammy, again, and reflects poorly on an account when I glance on it, making me less likely to engage with and/or follow it.
