Sending email from Gmail – SMTP etc.

    Hi there. I’m trying to set up my Gmail account so that I can send emails as myself from my website – i.e. (email visible only to moderators and staff). I receive emails to this address fine, but I want to send brand new emails from it via my Gmail account. When I go to ‘add another email address you own’ in the Gmail settings, it says my SMTP server is smtp.crowstoangels.com and the port is 587. It then asks for my username and password. When I put in the u/name and p/w from my WordPress account, and hit ‘Add Account’, it thinks about doing something for a short while, then comes back with the following error message:

    “Your other email provider is responding too slowly. Please try again later, or contact the administrator of your other domain for further information.”

    What am I doing wrong? The only info I can find about SMTP on the help site here suggests installing a plugin, but I can’t find plugins on my dashboard at all. According to the only help I could find, I shouldn’t need them because my account is hosted by wordpress.com. But it’s still not working.

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    On WordPress.com, we do not provide email hosting, but you can connect email hosting from another provider to your custom domain. Here are instructions for using email with your custom domain:

    Please let me know if you have further questions or if anything is unclear.

    I’m sorry, I’m afraid that hasn’t helped. I’ve set up email in WordPress already, with the CNAME, MX etc. stuff. I get emails to the email address I set up, which get forwarded to my Gmail account. However, I want to be able to send emails from that email address, using my Gmail account. In order to do so, I need the information I put in the original post.

    The help pages you linked me to just seem to be about setting up email forwarding from the original provider to WordPress. I want to be able to send emails from the address I’ve already set up. Is this possible? If so, how do I go about it please?

    @acorvyn

    At present, you have an email forward set up:

    Email Forwarding

    As I previously stated, we do not offer email hosting. If you’d like to use your custom domain to send and manage email, you will need to find an email provider and configure it to work with your WordPress.com domain, as outlined here:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/add-email/

    I want to be able to send emails from the address I’ve already set up. Is this possible? If so, how do I go about it please?

    You will be able to accomplish this, if you follow the instructions outlined in the page I’ve linked to. Specifically, instructions for Google Apps can be found here:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/add-email/add-email-through-google-apps/

    Let us know if you have any more questions.

    Hi, thanks for this. I’ve set up the Google apps thing, and I’ve had a go at setting up the email forwarding as described in your final link above. However, when I tried to add the MX records, I could only add the first one:
    ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM with priority 1. If I try to add the other records below this, I get the message:
    “This record cannot be added, as it conflicts with an existing WordPress.com record.”

    Do I need to add the other records? What are they actually for? The answer doesn’t seem to be in the Gmail issues page.

    @acorvyn

    You will not be able to use both WordPress.com email forwarding and a full email hosting solution through a provider such as Google. If you’d like to continue with setting up Google Apps, first remove the current MX record:

    Then, proceed with the instructions as outlined here:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/add-email/add-email-through-google-apps/

    If you have any more questions, please let us know.

    Thanks. Unfortunately I tried removing the WordPress MX record, but I still have the problem with only the first Google MX record working. The rest still come up with the error message I reported above.

    @acorvyn

    I’ve added the required MX records without incident. Please allow up to 48 hours for the changes to become effective, and let us know if you have any more questions.

    Happy New Year :-)
