Sending out Pingbacks

I know it’s possible to change the settings on my blog so that it won’t send out pingbacks when I link to someone else’s blog. However, I don’t want to change the blanket setting, I just want to disable it for one specific post. I couldn’t find such a setting anywhere.

When I changed the setting it said that those default settings can be changed for an individual post, but when editing a post all I can see under Discussion is how to disable comments or how to disable trackbacks and pingbacks on that post, i.e. incoming. I tested it with one post just in case this covered outgoing pingbacks too, but no, it doesn’t.

I also tested another possible way round this – I tried changing the blanket setting so it won’t send out pingbacks, publishing a post with a link, and then changing the setting back. This didn’t help – once I changed the setting back, a pingback was sent out for that post that I’d published earlier.

Is there any way I can do this, or am I trying to achieve the impossible?

to clarify again, what I want to do is this: I want my blog to normally send out pingbacks when I link to someone’s post, but I want to publish a one-off post with a link without generating an outgoing pingback.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

No problem. That setting is not always shown on the Edit Post screen by default, but can be turned on by clicking on the Screen Options tab in the upper right corner of your screen, and making sure that “Discussions” is checked, as shown here: https://cloudup.com/cB4dblaPYCV

That will reveal the box that has te settings to turn off pingbacks and comments per-post. From there you will just need to scroll down until you see the discussion settings box, and unchecking “Pingbacks”

Thanks but, as I said, I know how to disable pingbacks on a specific post but this does not appear to affect sending outgoing pingbacks.

I did a test post using that setting, linking to a post on one of my other blogs so that I could see if a pingback was sent out. It was :(

But let me try again to explain more clearly what my problem is.

When I go to the discussion tab in my blog settings, there’s a bit at the top that says:

    Default article settings
    – Attempt to notify any blogs linked to from the article
    – Allow link notifications from other blogs (pingbacks and trackbacks)
    – Allow people to post comments on new articles
(These settings may be overridden for individual articles.)

However, when I’m editing an individual post, the discussion box only allows me to override the second and third of these, not the first one. I can disable comments on that post, I can set it not to allow pingbacks from other blogs, but I cannot – as far as I can see – set it not to attempt to notify blogs linked to in that post. Not for an individual post.

Am I missing anything? Is there a setting I’ve overlooked? Or is there some other way of achieving this, through html or something?

  • Hi there,

Thanks for clarifying. I’ll be happy to bring that up with our developers, but for now there is no way to prevent outgoing pings on a per-post basis.
