SEO and pagerank.

I’m wondering if you can help me out with a question. I’m trying to figure out this SEO optimization and page rank thing. I’ve read a lot of stuff out there but can’t seem to figure it out, really. What do you know about all that? In particular, can you shed any light on backlinks? I checked my backlinks with a few backlink checker sites–one said I had absolutely zero backlinks, the other said I had over 200! On that site, I kept seeing verumserum over and over again. I don’t know what to make of that discrepancy. Like I asked above, can you shed any wisdom on the matter?

Plus, I don’t even think I *have* a page rank, and I’m a bit lost as to how to go about getting one. Do I need to register with any service on google or something?

Clarification: Verumserum is a certain blog. I appear in their blogroll.

You don’t need to register to get a pagerank. It’s literally just a ranking of your site according to Google. High pagerank means more people are linking to you. There are numerous pagerank testers online, so just google for one.

The discrepancy you noted between different ranking sites probably just means that one works and the other is broken. It’s quite common. Technorati.com is the definitive site, although it too is often broken.
