SEO implications
-
If I move my .wordpress site to a new .com URL and upgrade to a wordpress Premium account will I lose any SEO benefits I have got? The .wordpress ranks well for certain terms and I cannot afford to lose traffic so will the urls automatically redirect?
Hope you can advise -
whatever.wordpress.com always outranks whatever.com, because there are thirty million people who have subdomains of wordpress.com. That said, I do always recommend the custom domain, because while you lose search engine juice in the short term, in the long term you look a lot more professional, and your friends are going to be searching for whatever.com. They never remember it’s whatever.wordpress.com.
If you buy a custom domain and mapping BOTH your old URL and your new one work. If you set the new one as primary, the URL bar will always say whatever.com. But basically it’s like owning a house and putting in an extra door; it does not change the house.
