SEO Site Title

    I have added a second line to my site title thru CSS customization.
    Will search engines consider it also or only the “main” site title that comes with the theme? (purpose SEO)
    I would like search engines consider both, especially the second one which matches with the website name (dotcom)

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Do you mean the words “Ariadna’s Thread”? I don’t think search engines can spider text that’s not output in the browser’s source, but instead are placed in CSS.

    If those words are important to you I’d suggest including them either in your site title or tagline.

  • The site title is just one of the many elements that search engines take into account when ranking a site. You can learn more about SEO in these posts:

    This is a multi-user blogging platform. Our blogs share a common architecture and we bloggers cannot access metadata and add anything at all to the <header>.

    Does Customize let me edit HTML?
    No. Customize allows you to edit fonts, colors, and CSS only. You can change the appearance of a theme, but not its HTML markup or PHP code. If you require this functionality, please consider moving your blog to a web host that supports theme code modifications. You can read more about why here, and find a suitable host here. From: https://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/#frequently-asked-questions

    As we wordpress.COM bloggers do not have metadata access what’s important in terms of meta description are the keywords in the site title and the tagline:

  • timethief – just to clarify, I don’t think the OP was asking for access to metadata. They have added extra information to their site title via custom CSS and were wondering if search engines will see it.

    h1.site-title::after {
        color: #fff;
        content: "Ariadna's Thread";
        display: block;
        font-size: 45px;
        margin-top: 4px;
    }

    Okay then. Thanks for the clarity.

    I know that what’s important in terms of meta description are the keywords in the site title and the tagline because that’s what search engines use. I have experimented with this just as the authors of the SEO articles I link to in my posts have done and the total number of characters in the site title and tagline has a threshold. If we ignore it and/or fail to place relevant keywords effectively within the two then search engines will display what they choose to display.

    Thank you Kathy for helping on clarification. You got my question well. Thank you timethief I will be checking your links about SEO.

    Based on what Timethief suggests the best thing will be to place my “Ariadna’s Thread” text under the site title.
    Once I add extra text to my actual site title it will show in one row not two as I would like. ( that was the reason to add the text in custom CSS).

    Then my question will be now How to modify the site title Width and make it in two rows? so search engines will consider it. ?

  • Try something like this:

    .site-title {
         margin: 0px auto;
         max-width: 550px;
    }

    A Path Through the Labyrinth Ariadna’s thread
    Explore, Reflect and Reconnect with your inner being = 101 characters including spaces.

    Google typically displays the first 50-60 characters of a site title tag, or as many characters as will fit into a 512-pixel display followed by an ellipsis, “…”

    P.S. This the last time I’ll post to this thread because IMHO changing the CSS to accommodate 2 lines will not succeed in having the whole 101 characers displaying in the SERPs (search engine results).

  • I didn’t think the question was about having the title displayed in search engine results, but about SEs taking those words into account in their algorithm. Perhaps I misunderstood, though.

    @kathrynwp

    Thanks for posting again. The more I think about it the more I think I may of misunderstood simply because my mind works in a different way. I think: What’s Google going to display? before I think about anything else and I apologize for posting here at all.

    Sorry :(

  • No worries at all and no need to be sorry! It’s definitely possible that I’m the one who misunderstood and it’s good that you brought this up.

    Thanks for being gracious. When I experimented I made sure that there was no other site that used the same site title keyword phrases I was using in my site title and tagline. I have been also very cautious about not creating duplicate content across sites so maybe I became obsessive about this. ;)

    No need to ve sorry, both have been really helpful adn thoughtful in my learning.
    I am totally new to all this language. Maybe I have not used the correct words to describe my issue.
    But certanly my issue has been solve.
    I use your CSS kathy, it worked! I hope google algorithm take in consideration the words and I will see how google will display it ( Thank you also for bring it up- i was not thinking on that)
    Have a great day ladies,
