SEO with wordpress blog on already created website

I currently have a website and I’ve done everything Google has instructed me to do for SEO and yet smaller businesses in my market are ranking higher with wordpress. I am interested in getting a wordpress blog to increase SEO, but don’t know how to link it in order to maximize the blogs SEO power. Any suggestions?
