Serious spammer coming in
-
Hello
My spam filter normally catches all the spam, but for some reason I was getting hit seriously by about 15-20 comments from one person and I had to keep marking the comments to spam.My web knowledge is somewhat remedial on this front, but this was the number associated with it: 207.112.44.18
Anything I can do
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Know that 10 – 15 missed spam comments over the course of weeks is a very low number. Aksimet is a learning engine. If you get spam that slips by Akismet then mark it as spam (do not delete it) and over time Akismet will learn it’s spam. On the spam that Akismet catches on it takes only seconds to click “empty spam” and you don’t even have to click “empty spam” if you don’t want to. Akismet will maintain comments it has caught for 30 days from the time they were received, and then it will delete the comment automatically.
There is no such thing as eliminating all spam but Akismet works very well. Set up comment moderation, if you have not already done so, because allowing anonymous commenting on your blog is like putting out the welcome mat for spammers.
This page > Settings > Discussion is where you set up defaults for comments. http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/
I reduce spam by using this setting:
3. Automatically close comments on articles older than __ days – This setting can be used to have comments closed on articles that are X days old. As an example, if you only want articles to accept comments for 30 days you would check the box and type 30 into the text field. http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/#other-comment-settings
And I moderate comments too. Comment moderation http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/#comment-moderation
Discussion Settings
Other comment settings
_Comment author must fill out name and e-mail
_Users must be registered and logged in to commentYou may not want to moderate comments but here’s a reality check. The vast and overwhelming majority of all so-called information on the internet is spam. Over 80% of all so-called comments submitted to .wordpress.com blogs every day are spam.
re: comment blacklisting
Do not include IP addresses as they are not unique and the result can be blocking legitimate commenters. http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/#comment-blacklist -
Thanks TT. Almost didn’t “recognize” you with the avatar switch.
I probably wasn’t specific enough. I was getting all that spam through in the course of 10 minutes, which was really unusual. I was curious if there was something I could have done to prevent something like that.
Thank you for the suggestions. I’ll definitely start making use of them, especially the closed comments. Appreciate it!

Yeah, the rate of them coming through back to back like that had me worried and it was on posts I’d written in the last 12 hours so I was wondering what was going on.

Hi there,
It sounds like these spam messages came through to your inbox, but just to verify, these were not just hitting your spam box, correct?
Usually when this happens it is because of one of two things: 1) a new spam attack vector which we haven’t had the chance to adjust to quite yet. Our systems will update and you will stop receiving those messages eventually. Or 2) you may have white-listed a spam message from that particular user previously, which allows them to continue to spam you over and over.
Since we will take care of the first option, you might want to review your older messages if you have the time to make sure that they are legitimate. If not, just spam them out. It will plug that hole and prevent future messages from coming through!
