Seriously, cannot figure out how to purchase domain registration/mapping

Trying to launch today, but wanted to change to idlefood.com first. Have been trying for about an hour. I have never used a website where it is so hard to spend money!

Various FAQ and forum posts say this:

Settings -> Domains and enter the domain you wish to purchase in the provided textbox. Click Add domain to blog. If the domain is available, it will allow you to purchase it and map it to your WordPress.com blog.

Untrue! It just says “you must purchase credits.”

    But where to purchase credits?

    Searching credits, I found
    a) you can only buy credits in the context where you need them. Thus, I cannot buy credits for this purpose.

    b) this thread, where everyone is suffering the same frustration as I:

BTW I am not overseas, I am in the US. It just doesn’t seem to work. I guess I better go to another service to register my domain, and then map it? It would be great if someone could explain why it is so insanely difficult to purchase a feature WordPress advertises. Or, you know, not advertise it. Why drag so many users into such a quandary? Why not just tell us “you can’t do that”?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

PS Just went to Go Daddy and discovered that my desired domain, idlefood.com, which was unclaimed as of a week ago when I opened my blog, is now owned. I was waiting to subscribe, thinking I wouldn’t waste money till I was going live. But I’m guessing that’s why I don’t have the option – some spambot scoops them up.

Hallelujah – once I figured out the problem, I was able to make it work (with a different domain). I would take this down but I don’t see a delete button
