Server access on free domain mapping wordpress.com account ?
-
I have a situation in which a blog is hosted with wordpress.com with domain mapping. The purchased Domain`s DNS addresses point to wordpress.com servers.
As this set up was not created by me , and as I know the hosting account at wordpress.com is free – I`d like to know if I can get any access to my space on the server.
The following questions are important for me:
Can I upload files ? ( pluggins, wordpress upgrade, changes to the themes files etc.)
Do I have CHMOD access ?
Can I use either FTP or HTTP to access the server ? If so – where do I find the details ?
Thank you. -
No to all of your questions. If you take a look at the FAQ on domain mapping, you will discover that nothing changes except the address of your blog. Everything else remains the same – and you are still bound by the Terms of Service.
If you want/need all those other things, you have to host your blog somewhere else.

Hi vivianpaige,
and thanks for your reply.
Does wordpress.com offer payed Hosting ?
Would you perhaps know the price for domain mapping ? ( its 10& per year for the domain, right ? But theres probably some monthly or yearly fee for the mapping, too…)
Thanks in advance… -
Domain mapping is $10 per year. The hosting of your domain thru wordpress.com plus the domain mapping is $15 per year. However, neither option is real hosting, in that you still don’t have access to the things you mentioned above. (If you qualify, they do offer VIP hosting, but the fee is about $500 per month.)
Bottom line is that if you want hosting and access to the stuff above, go find a host that has one-click installation of the free wordpress.ORG software. There is a list at the wordpress.ORG forums.

Thanks.
I guess I could`nt transfer the existing wordpress setup to the new host but would have to start afresh, right ? -
