Server error (500 error)

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello there,

I’m facing an issue with Elementor on my website, anytime I try to update my pages I receive this error “server error (500 error)” Therefore I cannot update. As the website is hosted with wordpress.com directly I’m pretty much limited to the fix that I could bring, and I thought the safest way to get around that is to receive support from you directly.

How can you help me sort this out, please?

    Hello there!

Great to hear from you! It looks like you previously contacted us via live chat three days ago regarding an issue with the Elementor plugin. Our Happiness Engineer had identified that the problem stems from this plugin. Here’s part of that transcript that explains the issue:

I see, thanks for trying that out. I checked Elementor on your site and it’s up-to-date. it does have this warning message though:

PHP Warning: Trying to access array offset on value of type bool in /srv/htdocs/wp-content/plugins/elementor/includes/managers/image.php on line 108

I also found this guide in Elementor on how to fix 500 error: https://elementor.com/help/500-error/

Please check that guide, and if you have any questions kindly reach out directly to their support at https://elementor.com/support/

To resolve the issue, we recommend checking out Elementor’s guides on how to fix the 500 error linked above and contacting their support team if that guide doesn’t fix the issue. If you need further assistance or need help implementing any changes, don’t hesitate to reach out to our Support team via live chat, and we’ll be more than happy to point you in the right direction.

I hope this information is helpful, and thank you for choosing WordPress.com. Please feel free to reach out if you have any further questions or concerns!

    Thank you for your answer

The main possibilities for this issue were listed as these ones from Elementor

    • Not enough memory allocated to your website – Elementor requires a minimum of 128MB of memory to function properly (if your website includes other plugins, we recommend 512MB). It might be that the memory allocated to your website is not enough to support its needs which results in a 500 error.
    • Third party plugin issue – If Elementor is not the only plugin you’re using, this 500 error might originate from an issue with other plugins.
    • Fatal Errors – A 500 error might be a result of another error, a fatal error. Fatal errors originate from your website’s PHP file.

I couldn’t even see the PHP log on my dashboard or any way to access it apart from myphpadmin, I’m pretty limited in what I can do. Can you get a further look into this for me, please?

  • Thanks for that, @cannaconnect1. I would think if it were a server problem, we’d be having similar issues with other sites that run Elementor, too, since they have similar configurations. Would you be willing to test this one out?

Third party plugin issue – If Elementor is not the only plugin you’re using, this 500 error might originate from an issue with other plugins.

Ironically, adding one more plugin is the easiest way to see how your site works with other plugins deactivated. The Health Check plugin allows you to test without actually affecting the live site. Can you give that a go and let us know what you find? Here’s how:

Hello there, I’ve installed the Health and Check plugin and the issue is not due to the other third-party plugins, even when only Elementor was enabled on the website I still had the issue, which left us the 2 other possibilities:

    • Not enough memory allocated to your website – Elementor requires a minimum of 128MB of memory to function properly (if your website includes other plugins, we recommend 512MB). It might be that the memory allocated to your website is not enough to support its needs which results in a 500 error.
    • Fatal Errors – A 500 error might be a result of another error, a fatal error. Fatal errors originate from your website’s PHP file.

Thanks for giving that a shot!

In terms of memory allocation, we actually allocate 512MB per site by default. You can find more information on this at our support page: https://wordpress.com/support/php-environment/

After taking a closer look, it seems like the issue might be due to the number of revisions on your homepage, which are currently at 119. To help alleviate this, we suggest deleting older revisions and limiting the number of revisions that are created in the future. We can delete all revisions for you one time, but if you’d like to be more selective with which revisions you delete and set a maximum number of revisions for each post or page, we recommend using a plugin like WP Revisions Control. This should help prevent any memory issues in the future.

Also, please feel free to uninstall the Health Check plugin since you’ve already done some testing for us.

If you continue to have any trouble, please don’t hesitate to let us know. We’re always happy to help!
