Server Not Fount, 404 Error – but only for me apparently

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi, I just migrated from Blogger where I had my own domain name I bought from enom (Blogger’s supplier), Unclefarkus.com. Well I imported my blog and figured out how to get WP to let me use that domain name for my new WP blog. All went pretty smooth, or so I thought. It cost 10 bucks but whatever, it’s worth it. Well, I am now facing problems in that I cannot view my blog without getting a 404 error. But it seems to be only doing that to me. I can get to the dashboard and all that quite fine. But no link to my blog works.

I’ve asked friends to view it and they say it works fine. I even got a comment.

But for the last 2 hours, I have not been able to see it at all. It is really frustrating.

Also, under the domain option, I have tried both “unclefarkus.wordpress.com” and “unclefarkus.com” as the default URL, but neither works for me. And there is a verification box to the right as well beside the unclefarkus.com URL option, but there is no text to enter.

I’m confused. What have I done wrong?

I tried to give all the relevant info btw :D
    Thanks for any help.

What operating system are you using? Mac or Windows?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Mac, Leopard to be specific.

  • Unknown's avatar

This might be an OS DNS caching issue. This article tells how to clear your DNS cache in Leopard. I run into this problem a lot with Windows machines, but less often with Mac. It is worth a try. It requires a trip to the “terminal” program in your utilities folder.

  • It’s not an OS issue.

unclefarkus, domain names that are registered through other providers (rather than purchased through WordPress.com) require an extra step or two before they’ll work on your blog.

    Domain Mapping

    Your two basic options are:

    1. Change your nameservers (at enom) to ns1.wordpress.com etc as listed on the page above. This is the easy way.

    2. Add a CNAME record for a specific subdomain as listed on the page above. This is the hard way, but is necessary if you want to use subdomains of your domain for purposes other than your WordPress.com blog.

Usually the domain mapping process will prompt you through this, I’m not sure why it didn’t in your case.

Actually the first time I tried your blog with the unclefarkus.com address it came up for me, but just now it did not.

How long ago did you change the DNS nameservers over to wordpress?

  • Unknown's avatar

Also in the domain stuff here at wordpress.COM, make sure that you click the “put blog here” link on the http://unclefarkus.com/ line.

Thanks Sacred, I cleared the cache but no results.

Thanks Telly, I did do step one when I changed it over, it wouldn’t find it until I did that, after doing so it found it and prompted my to pay 10 credits. As for the second option, I will have to give it a try.

Sacred, I changed that stuff over around 2 hours ago.

Thanks for the help so far.

@tellyworth, thanks for popping in on this one.

The other thing to remember is that it can take 24-48 hours or sometimes more for DNS nameserver changes to make it all the way to all the nameservers on the internet. With my nameserver change it actually took 72 hours for things to stabilize although that length of time is somewhat unusual.

I will keep that in mind and be patient for a couple of days before I get too worried. But also, I do not see a link that says “put blog here”. Is that bad?

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ve never done a domain mapping here so I’m going off of previous threads on the same thing here and the domain mapping support document.

Review that document again as it says, “Your domain should then appear as a choice below that button. Next to the domain name it will say “Put blog here”. Click that.”

Basically, everything worked as it said in that doc except that link isn’t there and I can’t view my blog lol. I’ll give it some more time I think. I may have jumped the gun, I guess time will tell.

  • Ah – I think we’re just seeing the effects of DNS propagation. It can take anywhere from a few hours to a few days for DNS servers everywhere to catch up.

The 404 message comes from Google/Blogger.

NB the “put blog here” link was changed recently to be less confusing.

You can access your dashboard here:

    http://unclefarkus.wordpress.com/wp-admin/

Switch the primary domain back to the wordpress.com one for now till DNS has caught up.

Since I saw it once, and others have seen it, I expect everything is OK and within a little while you will be able to see it. Let’s hope for less than 24 hours.

Thanks for all the help guys :)

Problem resolved. Apparently I just needed to give it time. I suppose the fact that I couldn’t see while others could is what made me ‘jump the gun’. Anyways, thanks again.

You’re welcome and I’m glad things are settling down. There may still be times when you go to your blog and get the error, there was with mine, but most likely by the end of the day everything will be solid.
