Set 1st post featured image and no columns

    In the Expound theme, I am aware of setting featured images and tagging posts to make them show in the first five posts, four of them in columns. Setting featured images and tags on selected posts worked as expected for Expound when I tried that.

    I would like to arrange my blog to look like timethief’s at:
    http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/
    without the four-column display, with no featured images on anything except a static one always shown with the first/latest post.

    At http://en.support.wordpress.com/featured-images/#other-featured-images it seems to say that in the Expound theme a featured image can be set for use as “First Post on Blog Index: 460 x 260 cropped.” I can’t find anywhere to establish just a single featured image for display always with only the first post, if that’s what they mean by “first post on blog index.”

    In my current test setup I’ve got no featured image set for any post, and the Reading Settings / Featured Content has no tag specified (blank) and number of posts = 1.

    Still, I get the unwanted four-column display of the most recent 4 posts after the latest one, and I don’t see a way to set a static image to always show with the most recent post.

    My blog is set to private. Changing it to public did not affect the issues described above.

    I’m using Firefox 24, WinXP SP3, 1600×900 px display, and my attitude is tweaked for learning that what I want is staring me in the face.

    Hi there,
    I do not upload large featured images to all my posts. I upload a single featured image to the single posts I tag as a Featured Post. When I have another post I want to feature I edit the first post and delete both the featured image and the tag.

    Thanks for your reply. It helped me see what I was misunderstanding. I now have it working as desired, by specifying the desired tag in Reading settings (and number of posts=1) and tagging only one post with that tag, and applying a featured image to that post only.

    I see what you’re saying about the “static” featured image, and I guessed that would be the way to handle it.

    However, any thoughts on what they mean by “First Post on Blog Index: 460 x 260 cropped” (scroll down to the Expound features) as one of the theme’s available featured image uses?

    NEVER MIND! I see what they mean. Only the first post gets the large featured image display.
