Set order for Categories – Please help

    Dear Bros,
    When we create New Pages, we can set order for pages (which page comes first, which page comes second and third, etc …). When we create New Category, how can we set order for Categories. Can we set which category is on top, which category comes second, etc ….

    I believe the only way to do that is to add numbers in front OR you can write a text widget and add the categories in by hand. Otherwise they come in alphabetical order.

    Yes, (1) add number in frond – (2) they come in alphabetical order and (3) Write a text widget. I am a newcomer, so I don’t know how to write a text widget. Could you please give me more details/more info about it.

    All categories are automatically displayed in alphabetical order. To change the order you have 2 options:
    1. Insert numbers before the category titles and instead of getting this display you can assign the order by number.
    apples
    bananas
    cherries

    change category titles to:
    1cherries
    2 apples
    3 bananas

    2. If you insert numbers as described above then install the categories widget in your sidebar and they will display in numerical, rather than alphabetical order. The categories widget will automatically update as you add new categories with numbers and publish new posts.

    3. Do not insert numbers but instead make your own text widget entering the categories in the order you want, but note that it will NOT automatically update. You will have to add any new categories you create to it manually.

    Yes, I add new category with number 1 (that means I want this category appears on top) but still there are two categories with number 1, and they display in alphabetical (say 1- apple and 1- orange). The categories did not automatically update as I understood (if I add new category with number 1, the old category with number 1 should be automatically changed to number 2, etc …). That does not happens !!!.
    So if I add new category 1 (display on top), I have to change the numbers of all old categories.

    You’re right, the numbering is manual, not automatic. It’s a workaround for a limitation of WordPress.com. Sorry!

    Oh, I see the confusion. Timethief was saying that if you decide to add numbers to your Category names, the manual changes you make to your category names will be automatically displayed in the Category widget.

    If you go with a Text widget, then you have to manually update the text in the widget.
