set up own web site

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

I would like to set up a simple web site based on my own design – a landing page with two links on it, each link leading to one other page. Content is mostly text.

I have my own domain, which I would use.

What do I have to do to get the web site (3 pages as outlined above) up and hosted by you?

    Thanks
    Ralf

    Hi Ralf,

If you want to use your own theme/design it might be best to move to WordPress.org. To clear up any confusion, WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two different entities. At WordPress.com, we provide hosting, support, and tons of features for blogs. Users also have the option to purchase a variety of upgrades to customize the look and feel of their blog. WordPress.org is a software for self-hosted sites. With WordPress.org, users are provided access to all backend files and can upload custom themes and plugins.

Check here to learn more about the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org:

If you don’t want to create your own theme, and would prefer to create static pages from a theme, you can do that on WordPress.com. You can choose from themes here:

    Thanks a lot.

I want the hosting etc covered.

So, the most cost effective way would probably be – get a premium service from you and ask a designer align with the themes available to design my site.

Which degree of freedom do we have to adapt the themes?
Can we come up with an own ‘theme’?

The site will be very simple – only for information purposes – text and a couple of picutres. No commerce, no data entry, etc. I want the perople to browse and then send me an eMail.

    Thx
    Ralf

    Hi Ralf,

In this case, I’d recommend finding a theme that will fit your needs here:

    theme.wordpress.com

Then create a static front page by going to Pages > Add new in your Dashboard. Then, go to Settings > Reading in your Dashboard and set that page as your static front page.

Please note that you can make changes if you edit CSS to your theme with the WordPress.com Premium upgrade (No Ads, Custom Design, VideoPress, 10GB of space and a free domain). Take a look at the upgrade and see if it’s right for you. Just remember that the only changes you can make are via CSS.

    Cheers!

    That was helpful, thank you.

So the best is to work in your environment based on existing themes, adapting the CSS.
Typically – would designers be able to do these adaptations or do I need a partner coding this?

Also- I have a domain which I would use and at the moment 2 eMail forwards based on this domain. Do I need to ‘transfer’ my domain to you? Does that include the eMail forward as well?

If you have a designer that knows CSS you will be good. Just a note, if you want to edit CSS you will need to purchase the WordPress.com Premium Upgrade. You will need the Custom Design upgrade that comes with it. It will allow you to change the CSS if you want.

In this case you would just be adding CSS changes, but you will not have access to the sites’ files. You can see how CSS is added by going to Appearance > Customize > CSS in your Dashboard. You can try Custom Design before purchasing Premium.

Check out the themes because you may find that you don’t need to make any CSS changes.

Also- I have a domain which I would use and at the moment 2 eMail forwards based on this domain. Do I need to ‘transfer’ my domain to you? Does that include the eMail forward as well?

While we register new domains here at WordPress.com, we’re not able to accept incoming transfers of existing domain names. Therefore, we recommend that you keep the name registered at your current registrar. You can use the domain for your site here at WordPress.com by mapping the domain, as explained here:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

You will need the domain mapping upgrade, but if you purchase Premium it will be included, so you don’t need to pay extra.
