Setting home/front page
-
Trying to build a website. Somehow, the page originally designated as the home page (the first one I built) is no longer labeled as such. If I go to just the .com page it is essentially blank and it is not listed as one of my pages so I cannot update it. In addition, regardless of what the documentation says, WP does not give me the ability to designate one of my pages as a home page (or a static page for that matter. Frankly, the documentation stinks. I almost feel like I am going to have to trash everything and start over. BTW, right now I am using the free version (only planning to go premium later when I need it, assuming I stay with WP). Does this free version limit my abilities in this area?
WP.com: Yes
Correct account: YesThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to moderators and staff)

Hi there,
I noticed that you have most of the pages on your site set to “Private” which is a setting that makes pages non-public, so they can only be accessed by someone who have been invited to have specific access to the site.
The issue is that your homepage needs to be publicly accessible for technical reasons, so you will want to make sure that the page you want to set as your homepage is switched from “Private” to “Published” (aka public) and then it will be possible.
There is a guide here on how to change this setting: https://wordpress.com/support/post-and-page-visibility/
If you wish to block access to the site while you set it up, instead you can set the entire site to “Private” in your settings here: https://wordpress.com/settings/yourtrueview.wordpress.com/
Setting your site to private will allow you to make the individual pages public (so you can set a homepage, set up your site menu, etc.) while still blocking access to your site.
BTW, right now I am using the free version (only planning to go premium later when I need it, assuming I stay with WP). Does this free version limit my abilities in this area?
Not with regard to the number of pages or blog posts on your site, no. You can set up as many of those as you wish, and have no limitation in what you can set as your homepage. As I mention the issue is due to the page visibility settings.
If you have any other questions along the way feel free to use this forum as a resource, we’re happy to help.

Setting the one page to public was easy enough and that did allow me to then designate it as the static home page. Interestingly that also solved another issue. The menu I had created was not showing anywhere except one page and once I specified the home page it propagated to all the other static pages.
I could not find anything in the documentation about this anywhere.
After accomplishing this I was then able to go back and designate the home page as Private once again.
Using the second link you provided, I was NOT able to set the entire site to private. When I tried to click on the site to open settings. nothing happened.
Love the name by the way. Nothing like a heaping pile of sarcasm.

Hi there,
Using the second link you provided, I was NOT able to set the entire site to private. When I tried to click on the site to open settings. nothing happened.
That’s because your site isn’t launched yet, so it’s already “private”. If anyone but you try to view it, all they see is this:
So you can safely publish everything on your site as “Public”, so you’ll be able to see how the site will look and behave once you make the site itself public. Private pages are only visible to admins, and don’t behave the same as regular pages, so using that option for development purposes can end up making things harder for you :)
Once you’re ready for people to see the site, go to Settings ->General and launch the site. Once the site is launched, you’ll have the option to set it to private and invite viewers, if you only want the site accessible to people you invite.

BTW, do Happiness Engineers have access to relaunched public pages for support purposes? If so, take a look. Thoughts? Suggestions? Will Ultimate Member support significant membership? If so, please let me know by email.

Hi there,
BTW, do Happiness Engineers have access to relaunched public pages for support purposes?
We do for those exact reasons.
Thoughts? Suggestions?
The site is looking good so far! Not sure what you are going for, but I like the clean minimalistic look.
Will Ultimate Member support significant membership? If so, please let me know by email.
Not sure what you mean by this – are you referring to the effects of upgrading to the Premium Plan?
-
Well that is good feedback. If you are not sure what I am going for then I have work to do on the content.
Yes, I understand that to use the Ultimate Member plug in, I will first have to convert to the Business premium plan. With that in mind, I am looking for some input on the volumes that Ultimate Member will support. Tens of thousands? Millions?

Hi again,
It is difficult to comment on what the Ultimate Member plugin while it is designed to “work with WordPress” it is not actually created by us, so we’re not familiar with it to that degree.
You can contact Ultimate Member directly to find out what the limitations of the plugin is. Their contact is here
What I will say is that we do have many sites on our Business Plan hosting that use the Ultimate Member plugin on their sites, and it runs fine on our service without issues.
It’s also worth considering that we have membership capabilities built in to WordPress.com if you upgrade to our Personal Plan (which is considerably more affordable than the Business Plan) and you can learn more about how that system works by viewing the video here:
